I have a A+ but it's kind useless IMO.. I'd never pay to get one.. other than what the test cost.

Are any of the lower level certs (A+ N+) worth anything really?
Or do you need something like CCNA or MCSE to get a job?

i got my a+ but only because where I graduated from they paid 75% of it. Easy as fuck. Didn't both going after anothing else. Around here no jobs require it, and most people don't know what the hell they are.

Does getting any of those actually do you any good? What's a good in demand certification now a days? and what's the expected salary one can get with a cert like that?

Bullshit. As a hiring manager, you were almost always disqualified if you came in with A+ or Net+ on your resume and you thought it meant a damn thing.

CCNA is _almost_ as bad, though we'll actually listen to your answers vs just blowing you off like we fo the A+ people.

A cert is a dessert topping, nothing more. It may help you get in the door for an interview, but thats really about it. Degrees carry more weight then certs when doing salary negotiation, but the question you've asked is mostly bogus.

In what field do you want to work, what experience do you have in an enterprise, how long have you been doing X, etc.

Good in demand? RHCE, CCISP, CCIE(and the variants), etc. MCSE is probably still useful to some.

I've an AIX cert and a solaris cert. Started doing the RHCE but it has very little relevance in my current world.

You people who say the certs are worthless are off your rocker.

Sure they're not the be all end all, but you can't really get your foot in the door for an entry level job without one (or several)

Experience is of course the major determining factor when it comes to salary but you can't get experience without a job, and you probably can't get a job without some certifications.

i think what makes them worthless is that every men and his dog has one , compared to a few years ago when if you had a cert you were thrown to the front of the line with a good chance at the position

I'm guessing that having a cert is alot like passing the bar exam or the cpa exam or whatever.
It doesn't guarantee you a job but it's going to be damn near impossible to find a job without passing those tests.

I'd like to see more discussion here about this from some people "in the know"
I have alot of free time these days and was thinking of taking some classes in this area to beef up my skill set and possibly have something to fall back on in case adult implodes one day.

I had CCNA, CCDA, and CCNP from Cisco.
I didn't bother to keep them current, they probably lapsed by now.
