MrIzzz 04-27-2006 04:13 PM

i used to have A+, but now i have about a dozen telecom certs...nothing important though

crockett 04-27-2006 04:16 PM

I have a A+ but it's kind useless IMO.. I'd never pay to get one.. other than what the test cost.

I went for my CCNA but I never took the test...and I am almost done with A+ hardware (easy as hell)

I plan on finishing my CCNA then taking Net+,MCP,MCDST,MCT,Security+

pstation 04-27-2006 04:24 PM

heh, i picked up an A+ cert about 3 years ago. i'm sure it's mostly outdated and useless now

Juicy D. Links 04-27-2006 04:29 PM

I have my CCNA

BigBen 04-27-2006 04:31 PM

A+ and MCSE. That was about 5 years ago though so not sure if they're still valid.

wdsguy 04-27-2006 04:44 PM

I got a CCNA about 4 yrs ago.

fuzebox 04-27-2006 05:07 PM

CCNA and RHCE like 6 years ago.

Snake Doctor 04-27-2006 05:13 PM

Are any of the lower level certs (A+ N+) worth anything really?
Or do you need something like CCNA or MCSE to get a job?

Those certs are like Foundation classes.. Pre requeists if you will...

If you don't know A+ hardware/OS and Basis networking you will Die in the CCNA class and MCSE

Sosa 04-27-2006 06:44 PM

i got my a+ but only because where I graduated from they paid 75% of it. Easy as fuck. Didn't both going after anothing else. Around here no jobs require it, and most people don't know what the hell they are.

Big Fish 47 04-27-2006 08:19 PM

I'm A+ certified :thumbsup

Gerco 04-27-2006 08:24 PM

CNE and MCSE here.. (CNE was Novells Cert but I got mine back in version 2.11) MCSE is Like 8 yeasr old, not sure if it's valid anymore either..

BUT, with both those certs in hand and a dollar... you can buy a soda just about anywhere!

goodgirl 04-27-2006 08:25 PM

MCSE but that was awhile ago.

dixymax 04-27-2006 09:01 PM

I have gone for the course mcse but not completed exams

Spunky 04-27-2006 09:03 PM

Wintergreen or peppermint?

woj 04-27-2006 09:20 PM

Does getting any of those actually do you any good? What's a good in demand certification now a days? and what's the expected salary one can get with a cert like that?

onlineriches 04-27-2006 09:21 PM

CCNA, not much of an accomplishment.

Bullshit. As a hiring manager, you were almost always disqualified if you came in with A+ or Net+ on your resume and you thought it meant a damn thing.

CCNA is _almost_ as bad, though we'll actually listen to your answers vs just blowing you off like we fo the A+ people.

A cert is a dessert topping, nothing more. It may help you get in the door for an interview, but thats really about it. Degrees carry more weight then certs when doing salary negotiation, but the question you've asked is mostly bogus.

In what field do you want to work, what experience do you have in an enterprise, how long have you been doing X, etc.

Good in demand? RHCE, CCISP, CCIE(and the variants), etc. MCSE is probably still useful to some.

I've an AIX cert and a solaris cert. Started doing the RHCE but it has very little relevance in my current world.

OG LennyT 04-27-2006 09:43 PM

A+, Network+, multiple certs with Microsoft Office stuff, AAS degree in Networking....

skinnay 04-27-2006 09:44 PM

almost done with a comp sci BS

biftek 04-27-2006 09:51 PM

msce here , ham radio ticket and a advance electronics cert

Snake Doctor 04-27-2006 09:54 PM

You people who say the certs are worthless are off your rocker.

Sure they're not the be all end all, but you can't really get your foot in the door for an entry level job without one (or several)

Experience is of course the major determining factor when it comes to salary but you can't get experience without a job, and you probably can't get a job without some certifications.

biftek 04-27-2006 09:56 PM

i think what makes them worthless is that every men and his dog has one , compared to a few years ago when if you had a cert you were thrown to the front of the line with a good chance at the position

I'm guessing that having a cert is alot like passing the bar exam or the cpa exam or whatever.
It doesn't guarantee you a job but it's going to be damn near impossible to find a job without passing those tests.

I'd like to see more discussion here about this from some people "in the know"
I have alot of free time these days and was thinking of taking some classes in this area to beef up my skill set and possibly have something to fall back on in case adult implodes one day.

Manowar 04-28-2006 02:34 PM

i'm an FBI

a female booty inspector

NoHassleSteve 04-28-2006 02:39 PM

I had CCNA, CCDA, and CCNP from Cisco.
I didn't bother to keep them current, they probably lapsed by now.

dodger21 04-28-2006 02:40 PM

A+, Mcse, Ccnp

SinisterStudios 04-28-2006 02:44 PM

I have my Checkpoint Firewall Certifications, MCSE, And a few other Certifications, but to tell you the truth they really dont mean shit anymore. Expereince rules , the certs are just pieces of paper
