Bondi Beach is the best place in New Zealand.

Just ask any Kiwi.

If you dont mind cold winters then Christchurch would be a good bet.

You will get more house for your dollar down there as well.

If you want things a little warmer then Napier is nice - good food and wine.

Tauranga is another town I would reccomend.

if you want to live in a city, Auckland or Wellington are the best options. Auckland ranked 5th in the Mercer worldwide quality of living survey which looks at thing such as weather, crime, infrastructure and general lifestyle. Wellington ranked 12th.

If you want to live somewhere that is chilled out and has nice weather, then Nelson is very popular, but it's a pretty small place.

Crime is generally low in New Zealand and it's a fairly safe place, but of course it has its problems. Gun crime here is very low relative to the US, it's just not part of the culture, police don't generally carry guns even.

Biggest difference I think most people from the US will notice is geography. New Zealand is very isolated, it's a long way from the rest of the world really, if you want to visit friends back in the US, it's a 12 hour flight just to the US west coast. Of course for some people the isolation is exactly why they like NZ.

any other questions hit me up on icq anytime. 739765

edit: NZ property <- prices in auckland are expensive, you will still get an ok house for 500k though.

For years, it had a larger Kiwi population that the NZ capital.

In all seriousness, NZ is a beautiful place, and the further south you get, the more so that is true IMHO. It's just the cold.

Bay of Islands in the North is also spectacular and filled with lovely people.

In my experience, for a small place, the people in the cities and out in the other areas are SOOOO different (especially the Maoris and Islanders).

I wouldn;t give you a pinch of shit for Auckland, although the property market has been kind to me there. Wellington is even worse, Christchurch is just too bloody cold for too bloody much of the year.

Hamilton I love, Bay of Islands would move there tomorrow and anywhere on the East coast up from Wellington is literally some of the most beautiful coastline you will EVER see anywhere.

New Zealand is, was and will remain an oxymoron for me.

Where was the place in NZ that they filmed Hobbiton, where the Hobbits lived in the Shire in LOTR? I heard its become a major tourist trap since the movies but I can't recall the name of the place or area.

Depends where your $500k NZ are coming from. Their currency is getting assraped now because of the carry trade unwinding: http://www.x-rates.com/d/USD/NZD/graph120.html

heh that's not right. In Australia totally there are more New Zealanders than Wellington but not just in Bondi or even Sydney (not historically either).

Hamilton is generally considered a hole, too rural and boring. When the Queensland Reds came over and lost to the Chiefs in rugby a few months back the blamed it on the fact that Hamilton was so god damned boring they'd lost the will to play Of course that's an overstatement and I've had a good time in Hamilton before, but it has a terrible reputation.

Thank God!

Another interesting fact, is that in the latest budget, new immigrants to NZ who derive their income from foreign sources (this industry! ) are tax exempt on those earnings for 5 years.

I was going to make a funny but CTB beat me to the punch. I would have to say any of the major capital cities would be a winner, but then you're moving from a sunny place to a cold ass place and I dunno mate, can't work that one out unless you love the cold.

That's an interesting exemption, if I was single it would almost be worth considering a hop across the pond for a few years... I'm currently giving about 30-40% of my gross income to our lovely govt.

Hi, yeah it was largely buried in the budget, and got very little coverage but i thought it quite interesting. Here's the quote.

"Budget 2005 also contains a number of tax measures to improve New Zealand?s access to worldwide labour, skills, and capital.

The first of these will reduce tax costs related to international recruitment to New Zealand. A temporary tax exemption of five years on foreign income will be made available to people who come to work here, whether they are foreigners or New Zealanders who have been non-resident for tax purposes for ten years. People who are not in employment will receive the same exemption for three years. "

Slap yourself round the face Sarah and thank God.

Wellington may not ne the dogs ass of the world, but you can sure see it from there !!

The best thing about Wellington in my personal experience was standing on the back of the Picton ferry watching fade into the distance.

I think I WANT to live in the places the rest of you don't want to live in ;) I'm looking for something rural, small town, not any nightlife - just somewhere I can relax. I thought I had that when I moved here, but it seems everyone in ATL had the same idea I did

Cold but nice sums it up.

but we are talking New Jersey cold rather than Toronto cold.

Wellington is a dump BTW - CTB has it dead on.

Peaches - if you want a place that is REALLY out of the way think about the West Coast of the South Island - around Hokitika for instance. Its one of the wettest places on the planet, but is stunning and they dont come much more isolated.

SamSam - [email protected]-m
