I just bought my Dad the new DirecTV DVR. I was going to send him all my links to the "tricks" you can use on TiVo. Does anyone know how much different this system is than TiVo? The TiVo branding is NO WHERE on the system, so I am assuming it has zero to do with the actual TiVo system

Peaches...DO NOT get the Direct TV DVR,.....it is crap right now and barely has any good features

if I were you I would look on the web for an independant dealer that sells the directv with tivo like this one weaknees.com/direct_tv_tivo.php?WKGW01_2625

oh shit, I see you already bought the system, my mistake

yeah, the directv DVR is NOT Tivo, Directv is starting to put their own dvr out now which is a very minimal version of what tivo offersd

while it will be good for someone that just wants basic dvr features, it wouoldn't be good for someone that wants something advanced

I called the cable company but they're out of DVR's and have no idea when they'll be getting them in.

Would it be a colossal waste of my money to go buy the TIVO box and the lifetime service deal for $299? Or should I just wait (god knows how long) and get the DVR from charter?

If you own a TIVO or a DVR I'd be interested to hear about your experience and whether or not you think it's worth it.
personally man, i have experience with both.

get the tivo with the lifetime deal. there are so many more things that you can do with tivo than dvr.

tons of features and options. dvr is really limited.

Yeah, already got it - but he's like me - he doesn't WANT anything advanced. We just want to be able to record shows while we're gone and not have to watch commercials. We're simple folk

Thanks for the advice.

Now that I'm thinking about it, how many more joins do I have to send you to get you to buy me the TIVO with the DVD-R?

I can see the promo now
"A1R3K loves TIVO so much he'll buy you one for sending 100 joins to RageCash"

Without doubt the best buy I ever did, almost.

TiVo with the "lifetime" deal used to be the lifetime of the system. My first TiVo died in less than a year. Had I bought the lifetime deal, I would have been screwed. This one I've had for about 4 years, but I don't pay a monthly fee for it because I have whatever the DirecTV premium thing.

I'm pretty sure the hardware I looked at had a 1 year warranty, but I'll have to look into the lifetime deal and make sure it's really "lifetime"

Thanks for the heads up

I have 3 TIVO's and a DVR from Comcast. The TIVO units can transfer shit to my PC (and then to DVD), can show pictures, play music, etc. hosted on a PC, and have a MUCH better remote.

The DVR is slick because it's integrated.

I still use the TIVO units more.

I miss my tivo because of the way it offered me suggestion shows as well as let me search for upcoming shows and movies based on title, actor etc. I would pay the fee for sure.

Tivo. Well worth it. My Tivo is so smart it records shows it knows I will love! (Not just ones put on the Season Pass Manager.)

I came home one night and much to my delight, Tivo had saved my very favorite episode of Seinfeld, the Soup Nazi one. If I could sleep with Tivo, I probably would thats how much I love it.

I wanted to update you folks on this.
Apparently you CANNOT record two shows at once while watching a 3rd show and all that stuff with Tivo unless you have the DirectTV Tivo.

Tivo just released a dual tuner on Monday that can record two shows at once (but not off of two digital cable channels at once)

I guess I'll just have to wait until Charter gets more DVR's in.

That is so whacked not being able to record a show while your watching live tv. I had no clues about tivos or anything, so I just bought one a few days ago at bestbuy, I didnt know they had dual turners. You can see the dual turners on on the website here http://www.tivo.com/2.0.asp They are already for sale!!

Well anyways, if im watching live tv and i programmed my tivo, the tivo will just record whatever im watching and not the show i told it too! that's totally whacked. I asked over in the tivo forums but they said that once u get used to tivo you dont even want to watch live tv, you just watch recorded programs while tivo is in the process of recording and you wont want to watch tv live.

Apparently there is a way to watch live tv while recording on a regular channel, you have to get a splitter or something. heres more info on how to do it http://customersupport.tivo.com/know...ic/tv1027.htm?
It looks kinda complicated, i dont know if i should do that, or return my used tivo (for a day or so) back to bestbuy and order a dual turner! If only i had known about the dual turner i would have gotten that instead of the one at bestbuy!

To know more about tivos you should go to the tivocommunity site (theres a link off the main tivo site)

I also wonder if bestbuy will take my tivo back, its like 2 days old but its been opened and used... I didnt know you couldnt watch tv while recording! I really want one of those dual tuners one.

No wonder theres such a huge rebate on the regular tivos. The tivo was $219 and bestbuy gave me a rebate coupon for $150! Thats's probably cause no one wants these tivos anymore now that they have dual tuners, everyone is gonna want those!

Now I have to drive all the way there and return it (if they accept it), what a hassle, im so lazy i dont feel like driving anywhere.

Do most of you guys have dual tuners??? Or do you just not watch live tv anymore? That must be weird.
