why do people always use chmod with numbers, most people who do that don't even know what the numbers mean, or what base they are even in

chmod a+rwx means all can read write and execute
chmod a-rwx no one can read write and execute
chmod u+ (user)
chmod g+ (group)

so for you chmod a+r blah

Depending on how your system's set up if you gotta write to the files you may need to change the owner too.

chown -R newowner filename

will do that.

So which one do you find easier...

chmod u=rwx,go=rx file

or...

chmod 755 file ?

Learning what the numbers are, is so much easier.
