When a domain expires...
how long does it take before it becomes available to register?

Depends on the registrar.. if it's piece of shit netsol, they are known to hold on to names for over 6 months.. ( not always ) the rest of them usually hold them anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months.

I just registered an expired name that became available today. It had expired on 1/16. You might have to wait a few months. You can tell when a name is going to be available when the whois information is cleared out. 5 days exactly after that it'll be available to register.
