ULTRADNS? Opinions?

Their sales guys are relentless. Does anyone here use their service? Does it make any difference? Is it worth the money?

I'd like to hear someone's opinion besides their high-pressure sales people's.

Their sales reps are clueless and beyond annoying, but I don't personally know much about the company or it's services.

We have been using them for about half a year now, definately worth the money. Since starting with them, we did see maybe 5-8% more traffic almost instantly.

I know little to nothing of the company, but I don't like the idea of relying on a managed service to serve my DNS. Just another point of failure. We host our own DNS.

I did all the research. I think it's worth it for you Steve, don't know how much they plan on charging you for it, but if you want to call or ICQ me to discuss I am happy to.

get your own DNS software, we have our own on a windows server (its on our co-lo mail server) and use simple DNS, its cheap, is just as good as anything out there and you can make changes anytime you need. pay once, no recurring charges like a service is.

Their product is completely "snake oil", in other words, it works if you think it works.

Withe the possible exception of if your current nameservers are completely broken (on shitty bandwidth with very high latency or packet loss, or the nameservers themselves have problems keeping up with the requests), the difference of maybe 30ms for the initial dns lookup will make no difference whatsoever.

Save your money, use the money to buy better cameras, content, servers, or hosting.

has anyone managed to find a way to get off of their call list? they employ the most aggressive telemarketers i've ever dealt with and i don't think there's a "do not call" list for businesses.

and the argument that "other people like it" will not ever sway me. damn man.

We signed on with them recently.

I was turned off by their sales tactics and wrote them off initially (I also think they're grossly overpriced), but eventually did come to an agreement with them. We didn't see a noticeable increase in traffic from it (moving from natnet's dns) but I'm glad to hear others have. I do think if you want total redundancy for your DNS lookups, this is the best service available. From what I know, they have the largest DNS server cluster available. They have an impressive client list (myspace, forbes, amazon, etc) which is hard to argue with.

Hit me up if you have any questions Steve (rick at thebestporn.com). Good luck.

We've been harassed by them for about 4 years now. Redundant, geographically distributed DNS isn't particularly useful if you don't also have redudant geographically distributed web-servers.

The reason you may see an increase in traffic is because their traffic tracking systems are faulty.

They had my traffic increasing 100% per month! Unfortunately it wasn't true and even worse, they wanted to bill me for that.

For example, after i shut them off in January, in Feb they said I had over 500,000 queries which how much traffic they originally said I would have when pointing all my traffic to them. Yet, I was sending them none!

I avoided their sales rep for two months. You're right, they are relentless! I finally returned his call to see what it was all about. Sounded interesting, but dubious. I would also love to hear more opinions on UltraDNS.

Here is the last thread about them

http://www.gfy.com/showthread.php?t=...light=ULTRADNS

It is really total BS. They overcharge you for a service that is not needed. Seriously I wouldn't ever work with them again.

Except for some flames there seems to be a lot of positive replies. I suppose it couldn't hurt to try them for a month assuming there is no downtime. Now I just have to figure out the price to decide if it's worth it.

Wow, thats crazy... Running your own dns servers cost nothing for what it is worth. Why would want to be on some shared DNS server?

Despite the flames on here, the fact that companies like Amazon, SexSearch and Nasty Dollars use them is quite an interesting selling point in my opinion.

Also, one person on the same hosting company as me says he noticed an instant improvement. That sure got my attention.

We use them and are happy with them. It's one less piece of complexity for us to manage, and lookup times are noticeably faster for overseas users.

E_Guru, I'm not seeing the same thing you are on that link. I'm seeing 7 servers on 7 different class C's, though some of them share class A's and B's. Also, keep in mind that those results are specific to the udns server that dnsstuff is hitting; if dnsstuff were in europe, they'd get different results. That's the whole point.

Cheers

An increase of 5-8% is only good if there is a 5-8% increase in sales.

Regardless, I don't think it is needed. It is grossly overpriced. I can get into a long winded spleel about DNS and how it works but I think someone already did in another thread.

There is a reason they have to call 10 times a day.

if you actually have many servers around the world, they may have some services you can use. That may explain Amazon's use.
SexSearch is not using them.
As for Nasty Dollars . . . they just signed up and for all I know will suffer the same fate as me.

Also, since they wanted to bill me at $5000 per month and I am literally 1000 times smaller than amazon, my guess is that they give their service at low or free rates for a couple companies like Amazon so that they can suck in suckers like me I am sure they aren't billing amazon 5 mill per month for DNS.

They try to lock you into a 2 year contract which like an ass I signed!
I have heard some people got away with a one year contract.

Also, watch out if they say they will give you a low price because once we got started, they started showing dramatic and completely inexplicable amounts of traffic.

In fact, in Feb after I cut them off and sent zero traffic, they showed more traffic amounts that they originally predicted I would send with 100% of my traffic.
They showed over 500,000 queries when I was not even pointing to their DNS!
