Anyone write for a blog network - compensation?

Im looking at offers for writing on a mainstream blog network and need something to compare. I have seen 10c a word and $5/post but nothing overly stimulating.

Anyone seen different pay rates?

Im trying to get a feel for what blog network owners/companies are paying writers on blogs. The offers above were what I've seen being offered from other companies.

So you actually want to sell blog writing?

No, Im trying to get a feel for what to offer blog writers to write. Weblogs Inc had been paying $5 post which is probably fair but doesn't necessarily generate any loyalty. Id like to develop a long-term offer and wanted to see what others were offering.

So, assuming you make profit as well, you have someone who writes 30 full articles for 200 or less?

unless you're a really good writer and get on staff, they pay peanuts. better off starting your own blog

Thanks J,

Im trying to determine what an equitable pay rate would be for a writer - Id be paying the writers and I'd like them to stick around for a while. Most of the networks pay for sh@t.

don't quote me on this, but if I recall correctly I read about the writers at gawker who had to write for at least three hours a day or something, every work day (mon to fri), and getting around $2k a month for that. and these are professional writers.

unless you own the blog, it really seems like shit money, and unless you're outstanding, being a 'writer' seems to be somewhat of a comodity online

Yes they paid 4 or 5 $ per post but it was on a montly quota which still came out to like $400. No love for the wordsmiths.

I was assuming he was wanting them for a fucking online mortage "broker" or the like.

Thats been my experience with people wanting mainstream articles. All those usually consist of are basic definitions of real estate terms, regurgitated OVER AND OVER. They are all inevitably used in mailings.

Ok but do you have a sample of any kind that represents what you're selling for that price? Also I'm assuming you aren't writing them so how many are you able to provide / day?

P.S., I'd link to some of those funny articles you mention but I've picked on that guy enough this year.

Well you assume wrong. If its REAL mainstream and not some nonsense, I will be more than happy to spend a couple hours a day writing entries for 4 or so decent blogs.

I can dust off a few hundred words here and there quickly, easily and intelligently. I enjoy writing, have an aptitude for it and I don't need the money all that bad.

Also, my wife has some talent.

Will keep it in mind. Since you like writing though you should probably grab a niched out mainstream blog and throw some adsense on it. I know it's hard to tell from the "bloggers" around here but 1 mainstream blog with 0 traffic trades and posts like you described above can make $100 to $500 / day easily.

Believe it or not, I'm about to go on sabbatical and dive feet first into blogs big time. I've played with them but never spent the time on it I should. I have a mainstream one in the works that will do VERY well.

I feel your pain, but if wishes were horses we'd all ride. /end cliche

My MAIN regret is that I didnt start grabbing domains in '98 or '99. I could have, but was distracted. There was a LOT of money to be made easily, when you look at it in hindsight.

thing is though, it's easy to look back now knowing what we know.

at that time, it was still all a risk, and no one knew what they were doing really. or if they did, they weren't telling anyone. imho

I've got one for you. I emailed webcams.com and cams.com back in just 2001 to ask if they were for sale. Neither of them answered but supposedly cams.com sold for 20k a few months later. As you know I think Lars bought if for a mill last year or so? Lets just say that due to the fact I was making a killing on webcams in 2001 I would have forked over 20k no questions asked if they had just answered their email.

I'm always dubious about set ups like this - what are you bringing to the table that you get 40%? what's stopping the writer getting set up himself?

i suggested 50/50 initially.

he is a buddy of mine at work.

i suggested that he could submit his text and link codes to me for 100% also.

he suggested 60/40 (60 to me) since i am doing all of the backend work,
and we are using my linkcodes.

he just likes to write, and is of the opinion the he can turn it out.

J,

Im tempted to offer something very similar to this offer to writers. In the long run it is better than $5/post. What I would offer is the hosting/tech help/linking/network growth/advertising sales.

There are many people eager to get started that lack this knowledge.
