Do you use Flash? Are you prepared?

Apparently, MicroSoft is issuing a non-security patch next Tuesday that could have some very interesting effects on embedded files that you include on your pages.

According to this article,

Quote:
When visiting a page that contains a slideshow, the slideshow will start and automatically skip to each slide. But, the caption bar does not appear when you mouse over the images, the thumbnails does not show up when you mouse over the slide numbers and you cannot stop, skip or use any of the controls by clicking on the them.

Instead you have to first click on the flash object, which activates it, then you can use the interaction controls.

The same happens for any site that relies on flash for navigation. The navigation bar just sites there inactively, until you click on it. Any fancy mouseOver effect, any button, or any slider you might have added does not work before the entire flash movie is activated.
In a nutshell, if you are using Flash in your software, site designs, eBooks, etc you will want to read the about two links in their entirety. Things that work today may not work in a week.

From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912945

Microsoft is releasing a software update to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This update changes the way in which Internet Explorer handles some Web pages that use ActiveX controls. Examples of programs that use ActiveX controls include the following:
Adobe Reader
Apple QuickTime Player
Macromedia Flash
Microsoft Windows Media Player
Real Networks RealPlayer
Sun Java Virtual Machine
After you install this update, you cannot interact with ActiveX controls from certain Web pages until these controls are enabled. To enable an ActiveX control, manually click the control. There are also techniques that Web developers can use to update their Web pages. For more information about these techniques, visit the following MSDN Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/ieupdate (http://msdn.microsoft.com/ieupdate)
As part of this Internet Explorer update, Microsoft will release updates to the current versions of Windows XP and of Windows Server 2003. All client operating systems will be updated. These client operating systems include the following:hahaha8226; Windows XP Starter Edition
hahaha8226; Windows XP Home Edition
hahaha8226; Windows XP Professional Edition
hahaha8226; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
hahaha8226; Windows XP Media Center Edition
hahaha8226; Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems
Currently, Microsoft has not released updates for earlier versions of Internet Explorer, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP. However, Microsoft may release updates for these earlier versions in the future. More information about release schedules will be posted in this article when the information becomes available.

Of course it is, and will be for a long time.

I vote for replacing the "Webmasters" link on tour pages with a Get Firefox button...

FF is now over 10% market share with Apple's Safari in 3rd spot.

I think folks are sick and tired of updating IE every couple weeks. Its really to the point of being comical. IE is like swiss cheese and a new hole appears as fast as they plug another one.

This is actually horrible. I have some main stream sites that use flash in certain places. This is going to suck.

What are you folks going to do that designed a flash site for another company that requested it, once they find out their site isn't going to work worth a shit once this update hits? Go through and redesign as necessary for free, or fix shit and send them a bill?

I know there are a lot of designers that still do some shit in Flash. Would be nice to hear an opinion or two. I make some sites for local small businesses and can just imagine the phone calls I will probably be receiving over this.

I am not a designer, and as Flash is not exactly SE friendly, I would never request it . . . however, if the asked for it, I can't see why it would be your responsibility if it stopped working due to a Microsoft update.

I do use flash a lot but for some inserts and eye candy stuff...

Not anymore for navigation or critical info... Too much time consuming, keeping the updates and change the files

I am curious to see how this shit will affect websites though

this is weak.

i like the idea about a get firefox button.

first i had to decide that i didnt care about dial up users.
now i might decide that i dont care about ie users.

im not using any flash on my adult sites, but i use it extensively in the mainstream.

decisions, decisions
