Go with ferret food. However, ferret food is quite expensive. I know a breeder who gives them meat but the ferret food is probably better.

Reading around most people seem to give them ferret food, or good quailty catfood, but seems that ferrets in Europe live longer than the ones in the US cause they mainly eat a raw prey diet.. mice, chicks etc

Ferret food usualy contain sugars which are bad for them. they get cancer.
But then I can't understand why they put stuff in the food if it's bad for them.

They're a pretty rare pet here in Spain aswell.. but they're cute lil fuckers.

Raw meat is the most natural, but canned or dried ferret or dog food is easier.
My sister´s friend had a ferret once - cute thing, golden fur, but stank like hell. I wouldn´t be able to stand it in the house probably.
It is a clever and funny pet if it gets enough attention though. Good luck with it

The ones I've been looking at are descented and have been spayed, so they don't smell, just a little bit musky.. not stinky though.

I've got one and as a +10years owner I can tell you that ferrets do best when given quality ferretfood or, worst case scenario, high quality cat food. Protiene level needs to be atleast 32% (the higher the better).
http://www.ferretstore.com/h-415.html and http://www.ferretstore.com/tf-01140.html are the best foods around. Although these are more expensive than catfood it's really better for your ferret. When given quality food the ferret will also eat less.

Also get some ferretone: they really love that shit and they simply love it.

Be prepared to get bitten a few times in the beginning, but he/she will become the perfect pet if threatend well.

I've got 4 of the little fuckers. Love 'em, but they're a lot to handle.

Mine just eat cat food. They're fat and healthy, and that's what counts.

I've had 6 of them over the years. Never had one bite or nip anyone.

Only one of mine tries to chew on your finger, but that's only when he's on his back and you're playing with him.

All in all, they're great pets. If you're getting 1, you really should get 2. More fun and not any more work.

You'll enjoy them,that's for sure.

Mine have their own room in the house. Huge cage, space to come out and run each day.

Smell stays in one spot too!

It's going to have it's own room, just got everything out of it apart from the cage and toys, then it'll be out in the house when we're around.

Had one for two years. It got a urinary tract infection and the vet couldnt get it any better, so we had to put it asleep. His name was Elmo. Was a cool little guy. Id stick with IAMS food for your ferrets.

We've had 3 ferret's over the past 10 years. Our first two died of old age, sadly they don't have a long life span. We give them Marshall's dried ferret food, but I have friend's with ferret's and they give their's Meow Mix and they do fine. Be sure and get some Furo-Vite along with the Ferrotone. Ferret's love it, we call it "ferret crack" because our ferret starts to shake as soon as he smells it. Good Luck, these furry little creature's make great pets (family members) and are soooo loveable.

We have one, he's a dream and loads of fun. Ours is completely docile, never biting or nipping anyone including young children. He loves his weekly baths and daily walks on the leash. Its simply hilarious to watch him stand up and stare nose to nose at the puppies.

Although his favorite game is hide-n-attack whenever I'm trying to make the beds .. he loves when I billow the sheets up and down over him lol

You'll find they also like to steal certain items (for us its mainly remote controls & telephones with the rubber type buttons or for some odd reason .. white clothes, socks, tshirts etc) and hide them away in their 'secret hideaway'.

and ummm ...*warning* - Never, ever leave expensive leather boots or sandals laying around where he/she can get them!!!! errrr ... or so I've heard *wink nudge* lol

Babies are a lot of fun and easier to train.

I got one of mine (my favorite...don't tell the others) from the Humane Society here in town. Cost just as much as it would have to go buy a baby, but I saw him there and couldn't leave him alone.

There are also lots of "Ferret Rescue Shelters", and if you live in a fairly decent sized US city...you should be able to find one.

One of mine has a remote control of her own now. It's as big as she is and it's funny to watch her move across the room with it.

She's also a climber, she's managed to figure out how to climb the back of the fridge and get up to the top of it.
