This is why Bird Flu Panic is all BS

http://www.mydna.com/health/flu/news...lu_humans.html

Its next to impossible for humans to transmit this variety of flu - which explains why its been around since the 1800s and has never caused a pandemic - other than the pandemic purchases of Tamiflu by the US Government by Bush to the tune of a few billions of dollars - funny that the benefactor of all of this "mainstream media fear" is the Secretary of Defense - I guess they forgot to mention the company he left to take the post at the Pentagon was Gilead Sciences where he was the the CEO and majority stockholder - holder of the patent on Tamiflu (and since he left his stock holdings have gone up incredibly since he owns millions of shares)

sars was meant to be the last big pandemic , now bird flu/spanish flu it's all crap , just the gov's using there terrorist acts again

funny thing is that tamiflu has been shown to be shit , does nothing , as the cases of human that have birdflu have shown that the virus adapts to fight againt tamiflu

more important - if you want to go to the CDC site and look up influenza deaths - oh lets just limit it to the first 11 weeks this year - in NYC alone there has been an average of 60 deaths a WEEK from pneumonia and influenza (the CDC always combines these) - so about 650 deaths this year just in that one city - and yet even right on their website they say that there is no human transmission vehicle for the avain flu yet - "although this could always change" (sure it could have changed since 1870 when it was first discovered to)
Then in their recent press conferences - an amazing thing happened - they pulled their support for the two most common flu/influenza immunizations that US citizens have been getting for years - saying that they are not effective anymore and that everyone needs to switch to Tamiflu for proper protection - give me a break

Look into the department we're talking about here - the CDC is part of the HHS run by this guy

"Prior to joining HHS, Azar was a partner with the Washington law firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding, where he specialized in litigation and appellate practice involving white collar criminal defense and internal investigations, congressional investigations, government ethics, administrative law, and employment counseling.
Azar also served as an Associate Independent Counsel during the first two years of the Whitewater investigation under Judge Kenneth Starr. Prior to that, he was an associate at Kirkland & Ellis in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in litigation and appellate matters"

He was also responsible for the 450 investigators that tracked down the anthrax attack following 9/11 - did a real hot job there too

Funny. If you check the GFY threads, a lot of the youngsters here were scared shitless. I hope they read this before pinging every bird in site.

"Bird Flu Is For Pussies

I am so sick and tired of hearing about the Avian Bird Flu. Every forum you visit today has some weirdo preaching about this virus and linking to all their bullshit conspiracy theorist websites or news articles ?proving them right? on the subject. Is it so hard for these pricks to understand that things of this nature are hyped to hell and back to sell products and drive traffic to the people posting the ?news??

The fact of matter is, whether or not the avian bird flu will be a huge pandemic wiping millions of people off the face of the earth, there isn?t anything you can do about it! These assholes are stocking up on Tamiflu and other useless supplies like surgical gloves and N-95 Surgical masks. Tamiflu does not work on this virus and the surgical masks are, to put it simply, INNEFFECTIVE!

I?m just joking around people. I?m going to join the ?run around and scream in fear? crowd as well. I?m just pissed off because I recently got over SARS, the killer bees have moved into my town and will be wreaking havoc on civilization as soon as the aliens give them the correct crop circle signal, and my damn computer clock still says it the year 1906 thanks to that pesky Y2K virus."

Ive never seen so much bull in one thread - well actually I have, but this is GFY.

The Virilent strain of H5N1 has been around since 1870?

Tamiflu dosnt work?

Surgical masks dont work?

The form of H5N1 we are concerned with was first detected in 1997.

Tamiflu is effective in some/most cases, a couple of people have still died after taking Tamiflu. Its not clear if that is because they had a 'new' strain or if they didnt get the drug in time - it has to be taken within 48 hours of the onset of symtems. Very few drugs are 100% effective. Should we stop taking antibiotics because people have died even after taking them?

Masks offer some but not 100% protection.

damian, tamiflu does not work against bird flu. The stuff that makes you catch bird flu is too small to be filtered by even the best surgical masks. You have swallowed the propaganda like a good little boy, now do your own research and quit being forcefed your opinions.

Donald Rumsfeld makes $5m killing on bird flu drug
Posted: 2006/03/13
From: UK Independent

Donald Rumsfeld has made a killing out of bird flu.

By Geoffrey Lean and Jonathan Owen

The US Defence Secretary has made more than $5m (£2.9m) in capital gains from selling shares in the biotechnology firm that discovered and developed Tamiflu, the drug being bought in massive amounts by Governments to treat a possible human pandemic of the disease.

More than 60 countries have so far ordered large stocks of the antiviral medication - the only oral medicine believed to be effective against the deadly H5N1 strain of the disease - to try to protect their people. The United Nations estimates that a pandemic could kill 150 million people worldwide.

Britain is about halfway through receiving an order of 14.6 million courses of the drug, which the Government hopes will avert some of the 700,000 deaths that might be expected. Tamiflu does not cure the disease, but if taken soon after symptoms appear it can reduce its severity.

The drug was developed by a Californian biotech company, Gilead Sciences. It is now made and sold by the giant chemical company Roche, which pays it a royalty on every tablet sold, currently about a fifth of its price.

Mr Rumsfeld was on the board of Gilead from 1988 to 2001, and was its chairman from 1997. He then left to join the Bush administration, but retained a huge shareholding .

The firm made a loss in 2003, the year before concern about bird flu started. Then revenues from Tamiflu almost quadrupled, to $44.6m, helping put the company well into the black. Sales almost quadrupled again, to $161.6m last year. During this time the share price trebled.

Mr Rumsfeld sold some of his Gilead shares in 2004 reaping - according to the financial disclosure report he is required to make each year - capital gains of more than $5m. The report showed that he still had up to $25m-worth of shares at the end of 2004, and at least one analyst believes his stake has grown well beyond that figure, as the share price has soared. Further details are not likely to become known, however, until Mr Rumsfeld makes his next disclosure in May.

The 2005 report showed that, in all, he owned shares worth up to $95.9m, from which he got an income of up to $13m, owned land worth up to $17m, and made $1m from renting it out.

He also had illiquid investments worth up to $8.1m, including in partnerships investing in biotechnology, issuing reproductions of paintings, and operating art galleries in New Mexico and Wyoming. He also has life insurance with a surrender value of up to $5m, and received up to $1m from the DHR Foundation, in which he has assets worth up to $25m, and $773,743 from the Donald H Rumsfeld Trust, in which he has assets of up to $50m.

Late last week no one at Gilead Sciences was available to comment on Mr Rumsfeld's sale of its stock. In a statement to The Independent on Sunday the Pentagon said: "Secretary Rumsfeld has no relationship with Gilead Sciences, Inc beyond his investments in the company. When he became Secretary of Defence in January 2001, divestiture of his investment in Gilead was not required by the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Office of Government Ethics or the Department of Defence Standards of Conduct Office.

"Upon taking office, he recused himself from participating in any particular matter when the matter would directly and predictably affect his financial interest in Gilead Sciences."

Say what? There's not enough vaccines to go around for everyone.

I think a lot of people are missing the point on this scare.

Its the scare itself that will fuck up our economy.

People will be more inclined to stay indoors away from other people, away from hanging out in shopping malls, worried about going to workplaces where lots of people are, worried about going to restaurants and clubs, etc.

Our local county government has plans to shut down every public school for several months even. That completely disrupts families where both husband and wife work. Who's going to get stuck at home watching the kids?

Companies are going to have people missing work like crazy if an outbreak occurs.

Its all the peripherial shit that will fuck us hard, not the flu itself so much.

Then you should positively know that Tamiflu is worth sweet fuck all and that these masks won't stop anything. Oh, and you should also know that the chance of this being the pandemic are the same as Sars ending the world. So why spread the fear?

Well - I can say I have a few

Damian - not calling your qualifications into question my friend - I was a health physicist in my "former life" so Im also a little qualified and have first hand knowledge of the ineptness of the WHO and CDC

The University of Florida has a good simple history of the Avian Flu http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/PS032
I dont believe I said that the H5N1 had been around since then - I said the avian flu had been - although most strains, including this one carry a threat between the birds and their handlers, as in most avian flues - this variant is not very likely to be transmitted human to human because of the attack location receptors - in human to human transmission it needs to be something around the mouth or nose - and the H5N1 can only attach in the lungs/internal organs. The only outlyer in documented cases was in the Orient where the drinking of fowl blood is common and one death was attributed to H5N1 from that type of exposure.

The point I was trying to make is that we have influenza/flu outbreaks every year in the US with over 100,000 deaths EVERY YEAR attributed to it - and now we are worried about a virus that has been around as long as medicine has been keeping records of these virii and killed 100 people over its whole history? Something doesnt make sense.

Granted any virus can mutate - just as avian flu has many times over the years to cause possible pandemics - but with clean facilities every one of these outbreaks has been controlled.

I was watching the news a few weeks ago, and they had a discussion with a government advisor. When asked how bird flu could be transmitted, he actually said "if you are intermate with an animal with the disease".

So I'm pretty sure I'm safe. But for some of you.....the Grim Reaper is sharpening his blade!!

well the 1918 Spanish flu that killed ~20 million, was an avian influenza virus.

The human H1N1 virus (1918 version) was different by only a few proteins from the avian version. That was enouth to change its characteristics, and its method of transmission in the same way we are seeing changes in the H5N1 form.

The H5N1 virus protein structure has already changed, since 1997, by 70% of the amount that was required by the H1N1 virus to become a pandemic.

We have bird flu all over here now (officially, since it has probably been around for over 100 years), but no reason to panic. Its just like all other virus or bacterias you can catch and taking precautions, however H5N1 is extremely difficult to catch. Normal hygiene, like washing your hands, take off your shoes when you go in etc is enough. And tell the kids not to touch dead birds.
To mutate, a person already must have another type of flu when getting H5N1. To spread like a pandemic, the virus most become airborn, which it is not because of the location of the virus in the body. And if someone get H5N1, they will die fast, and maybe already isolated, before it could mutate and spread to someone else.
So the worst scenario today is not pandemic among humans, but farms getting their birds infected and thereby loss of money.

They are government scientists, Clickhappy. They form an opinion of a matter and then they piece together the "proof" to support the opinion, not the other way around. I worry about bird flu about as much as I worry about the brand of toliet paper most commonly placed in public restrooms.

Right here -

back in Nov of 2005
Its also where he recommended Tamiflu (Rumsfeld is laughing all the way to the bank since his company that he was CEO of is the patent holder and he owns millions of stock shares still) as a treatment - although he was honest I guess in that he did say that the medication wouldnt do anything to prevent avian flu.

How are we supposed to get the rest of the popution to become more aware of the truths about our government?

Or are most Americans just too stupid to learn.
