HOLY CRAP! I just now witnessed two Southwest airplanes JUST miss eachother at LAX!!!

I was sitting a few hundered yards away from the runway by my bank about to take off when I see this one Southwest plane come in for landing - problem was that it was going UP and not down.

Next second I see ANOTHER Southwest plane COMING in for landing and it is JUST A 100 to 150 YARDS BELOW the first airplane!!!!!!! These fuckers had been cleared for landing at the SAME EXACT TIME and at the SAME RUNWAY!

It was like it was slow motion, the first plane that was above the other one had its engines FULL THROTTLE to avoid the second plane. UNBELIEVABLE! And I had a camera (phone) and forgot to take a fucking picture.

I wonder if this hits the news or if it is "hushed" away... My god, that was HAIRY!!!

I've heard there are a ton of NEAR misses on a very regular basis.

That's definitely the one job I could never do...Air Traffic Controller.

Are you kidding me? SWA is the best ... compared to other airlines, there is a reason why you wouldn't see United or any other airline have a show on TV. They know they mess up every now and then ... but other airlines are just ridiculous.

For real, that show does not do much for their image. I know they say "there is no such thing as bad publicity" but I beg to differ when it comes to that show.

They just talked about this on the news, I also got to see an article about it on Yahoo.com...

They got a picture of the pilots that were flying the first Southwest Airplane, these guys don't look like pilots, but I will let you guys decide for yourselves...

Have you got an exact time Oystien?

On that LAX map posted you can go back to a certain time and get it replayed.

Thats amazing - The top one is a Japan Airlines plane.

It looks like they get within 200 feet of each other - that could have been really nasty.

It was two Southwest planes, not a Japan Airlines one. I thought I saw double for a moment...

Yikes, they were within 100 feet of each other about 800 feet off the ground, from what I could gather. I wouldn't have wanted to be looking out the window, that's for sure.

According to this it is a Southwest and a JAL plain. One is from BNA and the other is from Osaka.

I will assume the Japanese pilot couldn't see the Southwest plain nor could he understand the clear english that said get behind the Southwest plain, not aww top aww iiiiii.

I despise Southwest, however this isn't their fault. LAX has long had an issue with air traffic control. Too many planes.

Apparently they led the world in near collisions last year, or something to that effect.

Yeah but if you scroll out 40 miles you're now talking about including alot more than just LAX and the transit traffic -- you've got Burbank, Ontario, Long Beach, John Wayne (OC), as well as LAX, and that's just for the larger airports -- there's also Van Nuys, Santa Monica, Torrance etc in there as well.

The number of actual arrivals and departures to LAX isn't that many of the planes on the map proportionately. I'm not saying it's an easy job at all, just that the map is a bit confusing when you figure that you've got about 35,000 feet of vertical room to sort out the ones just flying by but not landing or taking off...

Isnt it LAX controllers that would have to deal with it while they are in thier airspace though?

Def not a job I would fancy - If I have a bad day and mess up a gallery I get moaned at my a load of TGP owners - They have a bad day and..........

The SWA and JAL aircrafts you are talking about are landing on parallele runways. So, that is not the incident Oystein is talking about.

Near misses happen all the time indeed, in the air, on the ground as well...

You have the tower monitoring landings, take offs and grounds, then you have several stations based in L.A. Orange County, San Diego, etc. all handling various parts of the sky, up down and side ways... lol

You have airplanes missing their landing who have to put back the power, and then have just enough fuel to turn around and try again...

It still safer to fly than to cross the street

You have airplanes missing their landing who have to put back the power, and then have just enough fuel to turn around and try again...

It still safer to fly than to cross the street
I think you will find that is the incident - its about the right time and if it was parallel runways why did the the JAL plane start landing , get to 200 feet and then rise to 8000 feet again in a few mins only to circle back and land 15 mins later?

Everyday, every airplane in the world just misses each other, whether it is by 1 inch or 1000 miles. Congrats.
