HOLY CRAP! I just now witnessed two Southwest airplanes JUST miss eachother at LAX!!!

I was sitting a few hundered yards away from the runway by my bank about to take off when I see this one Southwest plane come in for landing - problem was that it was going UP and not down.

Next second I see ANOTHER Southwest plane COMING in for landing and it is JUST A 100 to 150 YARDS BELOW the first airplane!!!!!!! These fuckers had been cleared for landing at the SAME EXACT TIME and at the SAME RUNWAY!

It was like it was slow motion, the first plane that was above the other one had its engines FULL THROTTLE to avoid the second plane. UNBELIEVABLE! And I had a camera (phone) and forgot to take a fucking picture.

I wonder if this hits the news or if it is "hushed" away... My god, that was HAIRY!!!

scary stuff....after watching that tv show airline..i decided to never fly southwest....ever

ronaldo 04-18-2006 12:17 PM

I've heard there are a ton of NEAR misses on a very regular basis.

That's definitely the one job I could never do...Air Traffic Controller.

WebairGerard 04-18-2006 12:18 PM

that's scary stuff

majorbitch 04-18-2006 12:19 PM

Woah.. that's freaky. I love southwest though.. b/c I'm cheap like that :(

mrthumbs 04-18-2006 12:19 PM

wdsguy 04-18-2006 12:21 PM

Don't be a pussy, you would probably walk away alive and can sue for a huge amount of money.

aimeesweet 04-18-2006 12:22 PM

Scary... but apparently it happens all the time!

ronaldo 04-18-2006 12:30 PM

From... http://www.lawa.org/lax/flighttracks.cfm

Here's the reason I could never do that job...

http://www4.passur.com/lax.html

Scroll out to 20 or 40 miles and imagine keeping that under control.

OY 04-18-2006 12:32 PM

I am still shocked. Unreal close.

Are you kidding me? SWA is the best ... compared to other airlines, there is a reason why you wouldn't see United or any other airline have a show on TV. They know they mess up every now and then ... but other airlines are just ridiculous.

EdgeXXX 04-18-2006 12:38 PM

Probably happens a LOT more than you think. Remember that the next time you fly somewhere :winkwink:

Juicy D. Links 04-18-2006 12:40 PM

maybe the pilot was getting a BJ and was confused?

For real, that show does not do much for their image. I know they say "there is no such thing as bad publicity" but I beg to differ when it comes to that show.

Juicy D. Links 04-18-2006 12:44 PM

i flew southwest once , i saw the pilots doing shots of Tequila throughout the flight

CyberAgeGary 04-18-2006 12:51 PM

They just talked about this on the news, I also got to see an article about it on Yahoo.com...

They got a picture of the pilots that were flying the first Southwest Airplane, these guys don't look like pilots, but I will let you guys decide for yourselves...

Have you got an exact time Oystien?

On that LAX map posted you can go back to a certain time and get it replayed.

OY 04-18-2006 12:53 PM

OK, found it! Check out this link: http://www4.passur.com/lax.html (thanks Ronaldo) and put in the time of 11.18am today and push play! It happens around 11.19. Check out the planes on TOP of eachother!

mechanicvirus 04-18-2006 12:54 PM

Thats amazing - The top one is a Japan Airlines plane.

It looks like they get within 200 feet of each other - that could have been really nasty.

Downtime 04-18-2006 01:01 PM

damn that is pretty scary

It was two Southwest planes, not a Japan Airlines one. I thought I saw double for a moment...

Yikes, they were within 100 feet of each other about 800 feet off the ground, from what I could gather. I wouldn't have wanted to be looking out the window, that's for sure.

tyler. 04-18-2006 01:11 PM

DWB 04-18-2006 01:22 PM

fffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!! !!

I fly all the time and hate it, hate it, hate it!!! That is exactly the shit I fear. That was a close call.

Raven 04-18-2006 01:36 PM

This is eerie. I was just in chat with a friend of mine and we were talking about Southwest.....and this very type of thing.....

V_RocKs 04-18-2006 01:41 PM

According to this it is a Southwest and a JAL plain. One is from BNA and the other is from Osaka.

I will assume the Japanese pilot couldn't see the Southwest plain nor could he understand the clear english that said get behind the Southwest plain, not aww top aww iiiiii.

V_RocKs 04-18-2006 01:42 PM

At 11:27am he lines up over another Southwest plain above the 10fwy.

madawgz 04-18-2006 01:47 PM

damn, that woulda been a serious news report lol

V_RocKs 04-18-2006 01:48 PM

of course clearerer Engwish would be plane..

The Adult Broker 04-18-2006 01:48 PM

I've heard there have been so many near misses lately they are investigating the nations busiest airports. Bummer, I'm flying alot the next couple of weeks

I despise Southwest, however this isn't their fault. LAX has long had an issue with air traffic control. Too many planes.

Apparently they led the world in near collisions last year, or something to that effect.

sfera 04-18-2006 01:58 PM

they have it all cooridinated precisely lol

Yeah but if you scroll out 40 miles you're now talking about including alot more than just LAX and the transit traffic -- you've got Burbank, Ontario, Long Beach, John Wayne (OC), as well as LAX, and that's just for the larger airports -- there's also Van Nuys, Santa Monica, Torrance etc in there as well.

The number of actual arrivals and departures to LAX isn't that many of the planes on the map proportionately. I'm not saying it's an easy job at all, just that the map is a bit confusing when you figure that you've got about 35,000 feet of vertical room to sort out the ones just flying by but not landing or taking off...

Isnt it LAX controllers that would have to deal with it while they are in thier airspace though?

Def not a job I would fancy - If I have a bad day and mess up a gallery I get moaned at my a load of TGP owners - They have a bad day and.......... :Oh crap

That is crazy man!

justsexxx 04-18-2006 02:21 PM

wow somehow it 'hang' at 1120. Did one plane do a heavy brake in the air, and the other a restart?

benoitlc666 04-18-2006 02:32 PM

The SWA and JAL aircrafts you are talking about are landing on parallele runways. So, that is not the incident Oystein is talking about.

Near misses happen all the time indeed, in the air, on the ground as well...

You have the tower monitoring landings, take offs and grounds, then you have several stations based in L.A. Orange County, San Diego, etc. all handling various parts of the sky, up down and side ways... lol

You have airplanes missing their landing who have to put back the power, and then have just enough fuel to turn around and try again...

It still safer to fly than to cross the street :)

I think you will find that is the incident - its about the right time and if it was parallel runways why did the the JAL plane start landing , get to 200 feet and then rise to 8000 feet again in a few mins only to circle back and land 15 mins later?

Evil-Dan 04-18-2006 02:40 PM

and you reckon billing is hard Oystein ;-)

SomeCreep 04-18-2006 02:52 PM

Everyday, every airplane in the world just misses each other, whether it is by 1 inch or 1000 miles. Congrats.

CherryLipsRosa 04-18-2006 03:27 PM

woww that makes me think twice now

chshkt 04-18-2006 03:59 PM
