Whats the best program to learn if you want to do computer animation?

not porn related, if you wanted to do animation whats the best to learn?

Stuff like the Incredibles or Shrek.
Is Maya the best?

I think I may want to take it up as a fun hobby and not sure what program to play around with and get started with

Well if you have no background at all, perhaps Flash would be a good start. Playing around with movements and such. I have no idea really. I'm just throwing this out there. I know Flash animations are not even close to the same level as Shrek type shit, but it might be a good start for a hobby. Flash and a Wacom tab. But fuck I don't know.

Maya is definetly the top software for animation. Most movies that use 3D animation use Maya.

There's a version of Maya called "Personal Learning Edition". It's free to use for non-commercial purposes (they watermark your stuff). And the software maker offers loads of tutorials for free as well.

3D Studio Max is a bit complex, but there are great tutorials and books for it. If you want a step up, check Maya, much more advanced, but works well across a cluster of SGI's
