Quick SEO question regarding directories

If google has indexed a page with the url domain.com/pics/ and the index page is index.html, if I change the extension to index.shtml will that affect the listing in google?

Thanks for any replies

Not unless the URL that appears in Google reads domain.com/pics/index.html.

I wrote before that as soon as there is any item in the index from a location, Google will go there and look for index files, in all their permutations.

Put this in .htaccess and index.shtml becomes the default

DirectoryIndex index.shtml

domain.com/pics/ that will hold its pr and rank whether it is a .php, a .html or a .shtml. The only time it wouldnt is if you linked to specifically the index.html
