it really is a modern miracle - you go in for a one time session, and you come out with perfect eyes forever..

wow, i wonder what they will ahve in 20 years..

Backov 04-28-2002 08:43 PM

Other points no one has mentioned.. I formerly lived in Windsor, ON, which is where laser eye surgery was pioneered, apparently..

Anyway, in my research on the subject, there's basically some risk factors:

Like 1% has worse vision (but not blind) after the op.

A slightly higher percentage has no improvement.

The vast majority has just about ideal results.

However, the op is known to fuck with your night-vision sometimes - you know how you're driving at night and oncoming lights fuck you up? They fuck you up much worse. Not sure exactly why, but that's what I've heard.

My optometrist told me when I asked her (I wear a slight prescription) that most people who go in for eye surgery are hoping to get sight as good as mine (I am required to wear glasses while driving.)

So, caveat emptor. All that said, I will probably do it in the future as well.

Cheers,
Backov

4 needles in your eye what they hell did you have to have done sure wasnt lasek

reading over the paperwork I got

5% of the people that get it done have to have it done again within the first year

if its not perfect after 3 months you can go back and get an enhancement to tweak the corrections

willow 04-28-2002 10:53 PM

Make sure you go to a clinic that has the very latest technology.
The newer lasers are much more accurate because they track any very slight movement of the eyeball as they are firing and compensate.
This way if you're shaking in fear or twitch by even a fraction of an inch you always get a perfect aim. These lasers are also capable of compensating for irregularities in the eye tissue as they burn and generally produce better results by a few percent.
Same as with anything that doesn't grow back, do lots of homework.

Dont Do IT

i had corrective eye laser surgery
the doctor sneezed
now i have no eyebrows

Kimmykim 04-28-2002 11:02 PM

I know a couple of people that have had it done, with no bad consequences.

Only drawbacks I've heard of are that if you have it done when you are still quite young, you may end up having it done again later on.

Night blindness also seems to be one of the side effects, fairly mild if you didn't have it prior, increases it if you started out with it.

Damn, can I buy some pics? I'm sure that's a new niche :)

PersianKitty 04-28-2002 11:21 PM

My tech had it done about a year or so ago. Off the bat he said it was well worth it. He did mention that the problems at night weren't the greatest to deal with. I've heard others mention the night vision problem also.

I've mulled it over for several years. My own doc refuses to have it done. He claims that it's too new to know what the long term effects might be.

I guess I'll live with my contacts a while longer.

Rice_Master 04-28-2002 11:31 PM

Get one eye done first... wait a couple weeks... then get the other eye done... I know it sound kinda corny, but most people do that... cause if they fucked it up.. you still have the other eye

ace0r 04-28-2002 11:50 PM

you will love yourself for doing it. I had mine done 3 months ago, and no problems at all :thumbsup

bash 04-29-2002 12:00 AM

It's suposed to be a great thing from what I've been told... Fortunatly, I have 20/20... but its like a 5 minute operation and you can loose the coke bottles forever :)

wildjohn999 04-29-2002 12:24 AM

Do it if you can live with a "free cap". In lasik they make a flap on your eye which they flip back to do the laser incisions beneath. When the surgery is done the flap is flipped back over the hole, everything heals and you got 20/20 right? Well, about 85-90% of the time this is all well and good. But the other 15% of the time the flap becomes separated from the eye, know as a "free cap", and you're screwed! I have heard the flap comes loose from daily eye and eyelid movement, rubbing your eyes, or anything where there is direct contact to your eye like swimming and skydiving.

Rocky 04-29-2002 12:40 AM

go to Russia and have it done AMP

those fuckers started the procedure and have it down to an art form

of course they do put you on an assembly line and the doctors will bore you to death with their, "when i used to be a cheating, hitbot adult webmaster" stories

perks...lots of vodka before and after the operation

and if you go, say hi to Dr. Maltzokinski, he did a killer job on one of my prized gophers
:winkwink:

Amputate Your Head 05-10-2002 08:21 PM

well, Tanker... your post was the most inspiring by far..... and I've resolved myself to getting this done before I fly off to Maui..... I checked out the link you posted, but sadly, the only one in Cali is in Fresno.... and I ain't going to fucking Fresno for anything...

so if anyone knows of a good eye surgeon in the Bay Area,.... hit me with it now..... I'm in the market. :winkwink:

alias 05-10-2002 08:38 PM

yeah what about contacts, they aren't the best but can offer better vision and more flexibility while doing active sports etc

Honeyslut 05-10-2002 11:24 PM

Have you tried disposable contacts ?

can't wear 'em.... astigmatism is too bad....
docs told me I could spend thousands on custom contacts and still wouldn't be able to see right... :(

but I'm a prime candidate for the surgery.....

watch out for loss of your night vision.

long as I can see my monitors.... fuck the night vision. :winkwink:

Hypo 05-11-2002 01:36 AM

I'ev talked to many eye surgeons who are my closed friends. They have done numerous such operations without problems, 0% chances of failure. But they do not advise the operation - they say they only do it if the patient really wants it. In fact they advise against it at this stage, mainly for the long term questions. The myopic eye is a growing eye and a diseased eye, which is thinned out, and its size increases over time. Also there are other changes at old age. Since the procedure is a new one, they havent seen the patients after say, 30 years after the operation. The effect of the operation after 30 years would be anyone's guess. As for the short term effects everyone who's done it is extremely happy.

I've never heard of anything like this and don't believe it's true. 15% of a chance is too big for anyone to continue with a procedure like this.

LoveAsianChicks 05-11-2002 02:17 AM

First of all, the laser won't blind your eye.
But I've read about people who had this done and their night vision went really bad. Some people complained that lights that were normal now seemed too bright and bother some.
I've even read about a few people who
had the opperation and later on found they were seeing weird visual distortion.

boneprone 05-11-2002 02:18 AM

give the procedure some time to truly perfect itself.
Maybe in a year or two it will be vitrually risk free.

Milton 05-11-2002 02:21 AM

Go to Poland and do it .. they are cheap

boneprone 05-11-2002 02:23 AM

Yeah im gunna let Polish Doctors probe around in my eye with a laser.

Sounds like a real bad and cruel joke.

boneprone 05-11-2002 02:24 AM

Next thing ill hear are pollock jokes about me going blind.

Jokes like how many Pollocks does it take to do a laser eye surgery?

boneprone 05-11-2002 02:25 AM

disturbing

Shianna 05-11-2002 03:03 AM

I spent the 5k on Lasik in 99 and It's the best 5k I ever spent!
I would do it again. In and out in less than 15 minutes and within an hour or two you'll start to see better than you have in years.

The first night is really cool, all of the headlights and street lights look like starbursts, too bad it goes away LOL

I do have night vision problems but it seems the same as it was before I had it done.

My boss at the time didn't put up the 5k for Lasik and went for the needles (Radial Keratotomy), he had many problems, had to get it redone and still never got it quite right.

The laser is the only way to go

:winkwink:

Gator 05-11-2002 08:51 AM

I had the surgery done about 2 months ago. Cost 3K in Providence. My vision is now 20/15 (better than 20/20). Just make sure you go somewhere that the doctors check your eyes beforehand and know what they are doing in case something happens. Avoid the cheaper places that are out for numbers because they cut corners and use worse quality lasers.

HowlingWulf 05-11-2002 09:59 AM

I had my eyes done in Dec 00 by LasikVision in Montreal for $1100 USD and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Procedure itself took 15 mins (smells like burnt hair though), and a few days later I had 20/25 vision (I was nearsighted). Sure it's scary, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Like someone mentioned you have to be qualified for the surgery - no stigmatisms or such, and you can't be too young where your eyes are still getting worse. Sure there is an almost negligible chance of something going wrong, but so is driving your car to the quik-e-mart. Take the plunge and you'll be glad you did.

Jakke PNG 05-11-2002 10:08 AM

Aww crap. I just dumped all my eye-surgeon sponsors, I can't help you without my refcodes. Sorry man.

Hope ya get your head fixed too for the same price :thumbsup

Gator 05-12-2002 08:26 AM

I heard a bunch of people from the US were going to Canada to get the surgery because it is cheaper.

E-van 05-12-2002 09:45 AM

One of my best friends got it done, he went from being near blind to having to use reading glasses only to rest his vision. Pretty cool stuff, his eyesight was on the healing process for a couple weeks, but there was no real downtime. My mom is waiting in line to get hers done...

I'm just glad I don't have to wear glasses, perfect 20/20 ;)

Cuz that would fucking suck..... I've never even been able to wear contacts, so it's not like I'm used to having shit touching my freakin' eyeball.

Haven't you seen Clockwork Orange?? hehehehe

But actually I know someone who had it done, and said it was well worth it. He said the only "gnarly" part was that your eyeball is held open and this laser beam shoots into your iris. I can only imagine that must suck. But its not supposed to take very long I do believe.

If you do it, GOOD LUCK! I hear your balls get bigger after you have it done.

not your eyeballs hehe

Za Ha 05-12-2002 10:08 AM

I was thinking of doing it soon...

Contacts are good enough for now...

Let them develop it a bit more before you go under the "knife" ;) I know some people that are loving it... Go to Vancouver @ Lasik they are the best.

But if you are pressed for time there are some guys down the street that do it for $20 with a keychain laser... dunno how good it is though.

Pathfinder 05-12-2002 10:15 AM

Although corrective eye surgery (in theory) is not a life threatening procedure any elective surgery is dangerous. I recall (it has been alot of years ago) when the nurses went on strike in L.A. The surgeons stopped doing elective surgery during that period of time and the death rate in the county went down by a significant percentage.

-=HOAX=- 05-12-2002 11:52 AM

I didn't read much of the thread so sorry if its redundant...

But these are some of the things I've heard about it...I'm also looking to get it done.

I heard that after the surgery is done it can take up to like 3 - 4 months for your vision to actually correct...like your vision is constantly ironing itself out for a few weeks or months afterwards. The girl I knew who had it done complained of frequent headaches during this time.

She also went to British Columbia somewhere to get it done...apparently it was cheaper...I dunno if she skimped on a doctor or if she just found the rates to be lower there...Don't go to mexico though.

Its not permanent...remember when you were a kid and your eyes were growing, if you were like me you got your glasses and they'd slowly turn to shit and you have to go get a stronger perscription, which would eventually turn to shit and so on. Now as you've gotten older its kinda leveled out.

Well I hear its not permanent and it'll only last a few years...like maybe 10 if you're lucky...and you vision will slowly start to degrade again. Although I also heard that for much of that time your vision is better than 20/20...so that's cool...kinda like a mild super power er sumpthin.

The girl I know who had it done said she was stoked on it. She said the initial downtime was minimal although I'd see her wearing sunglasses indoors alot after the surgery so light sensitivity may have been high.

I'm curious about what staring at a monitor 40 hours a week tosses into the equation?

TopTGP 05-12-2002 12:06 PM

Yeah, my mum had laser eye surgery... It worked perfectly... Sometimes, I try putting her glasses on, one lens is like glass, the other one is thicker then my dick.

Tanker 05-12-2002 12:28 PM

I actually gained my night vision back befor the surgery I couldnt see at night

I went to the doctors last week for a follow up

I have 20/15 vision

I havnt had a problem at all

that freecap issue isnt a prob I actually talked to the doctor that happens like 1 in a million now because of the new ways of cutting

I would recommend it anyday I have talked with all 20 people that had it done the same afternoon I did it and they all were extremely happy

Tanker 05-12-2002 12:35 PM

they have been doing this surgery for 20 years
even befor the laser

The laser makes it more accurate and more painless

when the laser is actually on your eye its not bright its not painfull you dont even feel it

boldy 05-12-2002 12:43 PM
