Do you think the national speed limit of 55mph is too low?

Dropping the national speed limit may have cut down on fatal accidents but apparently a lot of people think 55mph is too slow.

These four drivers tried to drive 55mph on the Atlanta perimeter I-285 and look what happened.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...eed+l imit%22

Go to 3:30 on the video and tell me if you think 55 is too slow!

I couldn't make myself get past the part where they spelled "Obedience" wrong ;)

No one goes 55 on 285 unless there's a traffic jam, lol!

55 is waaaaay too slow.

Safe and comfortable flow of traffic with today's vehicles should be 75-85 imho

The national speed limit hasn't been 55 for about a dozen years.

It's up to the individual state. My state it's 70 as well as the bordering states. In Montana ther isn't any speed limit in the daytime.

Leave a few minutes earlier and 55 is fine. 65 is fine on the interstates outside of city limits, I think thats basically the legal limit.

Unless you're asking for trouble driving 55mph, which is the speed limit in Atlanta, is an invitation for a rear ender. Pick a lane and go with the flow. Just keep your slow ass mini-vans out of the left lane.

What is the standard speed limit in other countries on the highways?

About 80 in many EU countries. Unlimited in Germany.

I'm not sure what you are talking about, but the national speed limit was revoked YEARS ago. Each state now makes it's own rules. For most states, highway speed limits in rural areas are 65 or even 75.

Have you been alive for the last 6 years, or what?

wasn't there even one state that did away with the speed limit all together...or maybe they just raised it really high....

ah, it was Montana that did away with the speed limit all together, but they changed that due to fatalities....go figure

Texas is going to be 80mph though, if they already aren't

in south jersey (before you get to woodbridge) it's 65. woodbridge and north on the turnpike, it's 55. on the gsp it's 65 until you get close to union.

i never understood it.

now travel south on any nice day or during the summer and you're either doing 90 or stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for hours.

with new cars and new gas mileages, i dont know how they can set an avg mph.

yes 55 is too slow for most roads. We still have some 55 mph roads around here but that is because there isn't much of a shoulder.

It was on the news a couple weeks ago, so they did get coverage....

Don't know how it is nowadays, but in the early 70's, in CA. .. If you drove the speed limit and everyone else was driving faster, you were the hazard and could be ticketed...

The speed limit is now 65mph, but that's not on all freeways.

I'm sorry, they making the cars faster and also safer at the same time. I'm much more concerned about people running red lights and doing stupid crap.

When I go out onto our freeways if you drive 65mph your just pissing people off.

what a bunch f idiots those kids are . They broke several laws and almost caused an accident . brilliant..

The fast lane is for passing not for driving . The other law is a little more tricky. you cant impede traffic , but you also arent supposed to speed. so the two laws conflict..

I have recieved a ticket for driving in a fast lane.

people are in too much of a hurry anyways, they should ban all cars ( as much as i hate it ) and make everyone drive electric go-karts that cant go over 20.

If you want to go to a place where it's really fun to drive, come to the Philippines. No real traffic laws, no speed limits, no courtesy but no one really flips over it. They all know they're terrible drivers.
Many of the major road have no lane markers so you try and cram as many cars as possible side by side not to mention the scooters, motorcycles, jeepneys and other various modes of transportation. Hey, you wanna make a left turn from the far right lane, go ahead. Left from the far right, be my guest.
The real fun time here in Manila is at midnight for some inexplicable reason they switch all the traffic signals into blinking ones. Now you think these people know about the rules for blinking lights? Shit, they don't even acknowledge the regular traffic signals let alone blinking ones.

Yeah - just dont piss off those cops directing traffic in the Philippines - they all carry those machine guns and are a little trigger happy

Driving out to Vegas this year I ran into limits of 75 on I-40 in the west

For those that werent around in the early 70s - the reason for the 55 was the gas savings since we were being rationed gas based on our social security numbers - because the fuckers in Saudi Arabia were limiting how much gas we could get - makes you wonder about todays events - but then I guess all of these experts here at GFY know better than that

There should be tougher driving tests to pass. I'm so fed up with bad drivers... I fear a dozen accidents happening every time I go out. Most people do not drive well enough to handle 55MPH, 65 or even 30. Not like many people obey traffic laws anyway.

Bad and reckless drivers not only cause accidents but they also make insurance premiums outrageous.
