Why Do You Think Radar Dectors and Police Scanners are Legal?

Why Do You Think Radar Dectors and Police Scanners are Legal?
They only assist Criminals in beating Law Enforcement at their own game
which I fucking love but how did this get approved by "The Man" ?

because laws dont make things legal they make certain things ILLEGAL. So it would have to be breaking some law i suppose. and on that basis i suppose any law they might make would then prevent legit use of the same technology unless it was written in such a way to stop this. i guess its just a tough legal law to write..

" you cant detect radar " wouldnt work..

It just seems strange given the fact that the majority of Bank robberies involve Police Scanners

Just because scanners are legal, does not mean it is legal for you to use one.

CALIFORNIA CODES
PENAL CODE
SECTION 636.5. Any person not authorized by the sender, who intercepts any public safety radio service communication, by use of a scanner or any other means, for the purpose of using that communication to assist in the commission of a criminal offense or to avoid or escape arrest, trial, conviction, or punishment or who divulges to any person he or she knows to be a suspect in the commission of any criminal offense, the existence, contents, substance, purport, effect or meaning of that communication concerning the offense with the intent that the suspect may avoid or escape from arrest, trial, conviction, or punishment is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Nothing in this section shall preclude prosecution of any person
under Section 31 or 32.
As used in this section, "public safety radio service
communication" means a communication authorized by the Federal
Communications Commission to be transmitted by a station in the
public safety radio service.

Exactly. There are many things that are legal to own but can't be used for certain purposes. Take a gun, for example. You can own one legally, but you can't use it to commit a crime. Even a computer. It's not illegal to own one, but you can't legally hack with it. Not necessarily the best examples, but I'm sure you understand.

They're not legal in Canada... in fact its a rather hefty fine for possession of one. I believe its seizure plus $1000 or so.

Yup, and if those radar detectors in the police cars tell them that you have one, they can search your car without a warrant or any other suspicions. Crazy huh.

Crazy, but fair, IMO. I may just be tired, but I can't think of a legitimate reason to have one in your car.

How about to even out the playing field? If they can see me coming a mile away, I should be able to see them coming a mile away.

It only seems fair.

By legitimate, I meant legal, not fair ;)

IMO, the law is the law, whether or not I agree with it. If I choose to break a law and get caught, I'm not going to whine about.

If you aren't breaking the law, you wouldn't need it... with the exception of Police scanners. I can see how their use would help in situations such as freelance news, or as just a hobby to listen to shit going down.

I got more tickets when I had a radar detector then I have without one.

Well, it has saved me a lot of money. If you are racing around town and hoping a radar detector is going to help you, yeah you will get more tickets. But on the open road, they can't be beat.

I'll never forget the time my house was raided by the LA County Sheriff's and Hermosa Beach PD (looking for a friend of mine).

The next day my neighbor told me he was listening to his scanner and thought it sounded close, so he stuck his head out the front door only to have a cop on his porch tell him to go back inside.

I asked him, "why the hell didn't you call me then?"

The pro-side goes like this: Ya see a cop, ya slow down, citation notwithstanding. When ya have a detector, SURE, your "sight" is magnified, but so is the EFFECTIVENESS of the Cop there that day, for being BIGGER in your sights...

Scanners are cool. Now though most agencies use trunked systems so you've got to have the latest technology.

Some you can listen to online even.

Some states have laws against having scanners in places of business and in vehicles...

When I lived in S.C. tow truck drivers would park in various places and listen for accidents.. When one happened there'd be 14 dozen trucks racing to the scene hoping to be the one to get the tow. Caused big problems..

The reason people get tickets even when they have radar detectors is because they fail to learn the techniques to speeding. A lot of people get them, and think it's a license to speed, hence, they continue to get tickets.

I remember when I had bought my first Escort (I used radar detectors for a good 5+ years). It included a little booklet that gave you tips, and tricks to how and speed w/o getting caught. It also explain the same thing I just said. It's not a license to speed.

I have not had a radar detector in a good prolly 10 years. But I have not received a ticket either. Why? Because I still follow the tips that were in that booklet.

Pheonix, sorry, but scanners are entirely legal in Canada (although an old law in Manitoba makes them illegal to use in a moving vehicle, go figure). However, radar detectors are illegal.

It actually follows me logic about guns and hammers.

Radar Detectors exist for one reason: To help you break the law and get away with it. There is no other valid real world purpose to have a radar detector. If you aren't going that fast, you wound't care, right?

Guns exist only to kill things. There is no other reason to have a gun (except possibly to scare away someone who has a gun as well, or to "protect yourself"). There is no other valid uses for a gun except to threaten or actually shoot and possibly kill someone.

Hammers can kill people. They can also build houses, etc.

Valid use versus no valid use.

Alex

Woah.... HOLD ON THERE !!

This thread was about radar detectors and police scanners... NOT GUNS.

Im an avid Sports Shooter.

I and many Americans enjoy Trap Shooting, Skeet Shooting, Desert Clays, Competitive Pistol and Small Bore Rifle Shooting. My guns have many valid uses other than killing. And just to set the record straight. I am also a hunter. I enjoy hunting game, abide by state and federal laws in doing so, and always keep and eat any game taken from the field. Its a family tradition that I have been proud to pass down to my boys, who are now young men and avid outdoorsmen.

so Alex,,,
Go start your own Tree Hugging thread and lets keep this one on subject.

Or go use a hammer on your head !!!

Radar Detectors rule.... Dont leave home without one..

You should consider removing your head, because unless you are using it to wear a hat I can't see that you are utilizing it for any other purpose.

As far as I know Radar Detectors ARE legal in some parts of Canada. I live in Alberta and I have one. They sell them in all the stores here.

It's just ironic to me that they allow devices to be sold that are designed
for counter surveilvence. Most Bank Robbers us Police Scanners so they know when the 911 call is made. What purpose do Police Scanners serve except for Police, Criminals or the Bald Fat guy his moms basement with too much time on his hands?

Do not speed through high priority speed trap areas like school zones.

When on the highway, pass who you need to pass, and get back into the right lane. This illiminates the appearance of you speeding in the fast lane, and keeps you from being an easy target for their guns. It's harder for them to hit or distinguish you in a crowd. The radar will pick up the larger vehicles, typically semi's. So basically you are playing duck and weave.

Also when you get busted, do not slam on the brakes. Just take your foot off the gas. They are more apt to go after people who slam the brakes. Odd I know.

Those were just a few of them. But it had a lot of tips, and also a detailed explaination of how radar works, and how to trick out the radar. Like you racing by a semi, the radar will only clock the semi's speed (because it's a bigger target). However, most cops (SUPPPOSEDLY, atleast here) are supposedly "Speed tested" (laughable) where they can claim to clock your speed by eyesight alone.

Lasers are a whole nuther chapter. But I've only heard of lasers in OH. Mainly around Dayton I guess.
