Vista to use over 800 MB of RAM?

DAMN!

Not only that but takes up 7 GB of HD space.

Shit happens. Computers evolve. It's not too pricey to get like 4gb of ram and 600gb of hd...

4 GB of RAM for my computer is about $500( PC3200 RAM ). Anyways Vista is really made for computers that run on 64 architecture not 32 bit which most people currently have.

I fail to see the problem. Don't get vista then. If you buy a new computer with 64bit architechture, I would imagine you would cheap out and buy 128mb of ram for it.

Besides, most of the software I use costs more than $500... If something I needed required 1gb of ram, I'd buy 2 just to be sure. It's tax-deducable.. so why worry?

If you don't need the os, and don't have money for a computer upgrade.. don't upgrade.

The problem is is that you are a dick. geesh I just make a post about how much RAM Vista uses ands you throw insults. Fuck off douchebag!

Pardon me if I think $500 for RAM is too much. Any ways I'm sure all new computer being sold at X-mas time will have Vista. Well I guess Wal-Mart will be getting a lot of returns when people realize the 512 MB of RAM their computers came with is not enough and they have to shell out a few hundreds more $$ on RAM. You don't see an issue here?

No, I'm not a dick. You just apparently want to use your 1990's computer to run software made for 2006 computers. So no, I don't see the issue. So fuck off douchebag! heh.. goddamn, you get upset that the computer you bought from walmart in 95 won't run the OS you'd like to. Why do YOU get all excited over this? I just said that 800mb isn't unreasonable these days, and $500 is definately not a lot of money to be put into a computer.

I agree that the amount of RAM it uses is too much. The OS is a platform to run applications and shouldn't be using that much RAM. The problem is Microsoft is pushing a product with a zillion bells and whistles most people don't need and won't ever use.

From any angle I look at it, I want functional, not fancy. When I want fancy I throw in a c00l video game and check out the pretty textures and scenery.

it depends what you're doing. 800 MB may not be unreasonable for a designer, but it is for an average user.

come on - dell make a song and dance about "512 MB" memory, so 1 gig is not the norm by a long stretch

if it's true, sounds like a fuck up by microsoft. imho

Microshaft is always going to push the limits. All the deals they make with the hardware manufacturers are based on making people buy new hardware to run their new shit.

I'll give it at least a year to work some bugs out after it comes out. My 1.8GHZ laptop with 2 GBs of RAM runs like a beast. I've got two 19" LCDs running off of it and an external 160GB HD to supplement the 40GB in it. That's plenty for now. The only thing I really wish I could do is upgrade the video card to play the newer games. But...next laptop. :-)

I just made a post buddy. You were the one throwing insults and calling epole "cheap"

First of all I wasn't referring to ME personally in my posts. So try using your BRAIN.

Second my computer is 2 years old and I did not get it at wal-mart. I have upgraded the RAM from 512MB to 1 GB, got a graphic card, upgraded the CPU and got a 21" widescreen LCD. Yet somehow I'm "cheap". Ok whatever. Try not JUDGING people first dipshit.

Thirdly 800 mb for an OS is a lot and going by the other posters here YOU are the ONLY one to think otherwise.

Fourthly. $500 is A LOT to stick into a computer you just bought for x-mas. And by YOU I'm speaking in generalities I'm not referring to you personally or me for that matter. Fact is new computers will come with Vista whether people actually need it or not. Do you think wal-mart is going to tell the customers they have to shell out an extra few hundred in memory? By the way you can't even buy memory at a wal-mart.

Lastly, no one cares about how cool your 'puter is or how much you overpay for software. Just because you choose to do so doesn't make you "cool" And bragging about how $500 is nothing seems to me to be nothing more than a compsenation for your small penis.

Lol.
You're the one throwing insults here, not me. If I was I'd say "You're a fucking turd."

..and I'm not 'bragging' about $500, I'm just saying that $500 extra here and there isn't a big deal, I was also making a general statement. Most people on this board use their computer for work. If you think that spending $500 in your work environment is a big deal, I guess I should feel bad for you.

Walmart probably won't include a vista with their computers with 512mb ram if it needs 800... so how about YOU use your brain. Fucking idiot. Why in the fuck did you get all fired up about this? You seem to be a fucking clown.

All I said that the demands aren't that high. I don't care about the joe schmuck who bought his computer to surf the web and play solitaire. I was thinking it from the professional point of view.. you know, using the computer to work. That's what I do, and most likely 50% of the people on the board.
Windows 95 required a lot more ram than dos 5 and people probably complained about that too.

So how about you take a cold shower and clear your mind... Or go beat stray dogs or something to get that unnecessary anger out.

Upgrading the ram for a lot of people. Average people will be very costly, and not as likely to happen/

Not progressing is standing still. It would be silly not to bring out the OS just because some people cannot afford the upgrade. If you can't afford it, don't upgrade, it's simple, Windows XP will still be supported anyway, in fact, SP3 is coming out in 2007. So what's the big deal? No one forces you.

Besides, a very big part of this high memory usage is because of their new Aero 3D interface. There will be 6 versions of Windows Vista, Aero will not be included in the Home and Starter editions. Neither will a lot of other software professionals might need.

Another thing is that Vista can reserve a certain amount of memory for system speed (feature is called SuperFetch), to keep your most used programs in the background. SuperFetch can even keep different programs in memory on different days, depending on your usage. In fact, I've read it can use both system memory and flash memory.

Also, Vista will come out as both 32bits and a 64bits version. The last reviews I've read have changed my mind about the OS. I will definately upgrade to Vista Ultimate and take 2GB with it for starters.

The thing is that it's gonna be an upgrade over Windows XP, so an upgrade in specs is totally understandable. Look at PC games, they're minimal requirements keep getting higher and higher as the games get better, so you'd assume it'd be the same way with the OS. Nowadays 512 megs and 7-gigs is nothing especially since a 200-gig hard drive sounds small.

I myself have 2-gigs and a 300-gig drive on my system, so I'm set.

1 Gig of Ram can be bought for less then $80. Which will let everyone run Vista, just like buying a new Dell machine with 256mb of ram and XP.

Yeah..well, I don't think so.
win 95 was HUGE compared to a dos.
My first 468 had 8mb of memory and was 33mhz, and the computer was too fast for some games. That piece of shit couldn't run 95... it's time to move on from 95.

I agree with Gator. 800MB is a bit much. For $400-$500 I can get a new Dell PC, P4 2.8ghz with 512 RAM and a 15 inch LCD. Why the fuck would I have to spend $500 on RAM? Yes, the Dell PC is crap, but that's what the average person uses.

Maybe this demand in more ram will drive the prices down. I'm actually looking forward to putting in a few more gigs into my baby.

what dont you think so its a piece of shit? Its not evolution for it to get bulkier and bulkier. In evolution things get refined, which microsfot has never done. Unix is a superior os, apple was smart to build their os on that.

Ok 2GB might be for starters. PC3200? Are you joking? Me thinks anything under PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 won't be adequate for Vista. According the article is was using 800MB of ram while being IDLE.

You may find memory cheper elsewhere but I think this is as good a guide as nay

Im on xp pro , xp is ok at best its uses too many resources and has more holes then swiss cheese. Dont assume Im on some old system because I have a great dislike for windows. I had a dual core cpu before most knew what it was lol

i was just making a point...with all the tweaks and shit you can do on xp, it is a pretty solid machine

seriously, right now I have photoshop and premiere running along with all my normal apps, and I am only using 32% of the system CPU

my box is so tweaked out it isn't funny...

i think the article is misleading...

going by the graphic in the article its only using 400mb of physical ram and virtual ram is used to double that to make it 800mb... so it would probably run on 512mb and should run no probs on 1gb...

My two cents: 800MB might not be a huge commit, but the fact that we already know how bloated and inefficient MS software tends to be makes it harder to swallow, I think. I have 1GB of RAM and am planning to upgrade to 2GB soon, since opening Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and email and trillian and firefox and IE at the same time means I can only open a few raw photos in photoshop before I slow down. 4GB of RAM would be sweet.... I've been eyeing some OCZ for a while now.

Looks like it's $280 Cdn for one 2GB chip.

That's closer to $200 than $150 just to be technical. Almost $250 if you get the waranty.

I've never heard of that company. They may be alright, but you've got to be careful nowadays who you buy from. When you get Vista please let me know how it's working for you. I'd be curious.

You all work on computers every single day, yet many of you think this is outrageous or unbelievable? TGF is right... it's evolution.

When I got my first PC in 96, it had 32 MB of RAM to run Windows 95. As technology progresses, system requirements progress too. It's been the norm for as long as computing has been around.

Most new computers come with 512 MB of RAM standard and have for well over a year. If Vista needs more, PC makers will put more RAM in their pre-built systems if they want to bundle it with Vista. The concept of Walmart loading Vista onto their systems without enough RAM is unbelievable. It's akin to them loading XP Pro on a system with 128 MB of RAM. People would just return the system.
