Not progressing is standing still. It would be silly not to bring out the OS just because some people cannot afford the upgrade. If you can't afford it, don't upgrade, it's simple, Windows XP will still be supported anyway, in fact, SP3 is coming out in 2007. So what's the big deal? No one forces you.
Besides, a very big part of this high memory usage is because of their new Aero 3D interface. There will be 6 versions of Windows Vista, Aero will not be included in the Home and Starter editions. Neither will a lot of other software professionals might need.
Another thing is that Vista can reserve a certain amount of memory for system speed (feature is called SuperFetch), to keep your most used programs in the background. SuperFetch can even keep different programs in memory on different days, depending on your usage. In fact, I've read it can use both system memory and flash memory.
Also, Vista will come out as both 32bits and a 64bits version. The last reviews I've read have changed my mind about the OS. I will definately upgrade to Vista Ultimate and take 2GB with it for starters.
