Will they use the Patriot act against this guy?

One of the sections of the patriot act is about speaking against the government. This guy is being accused of teaching against it.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11648765/

I know that in most states, and in a regular court, this would not go very far, and it seems that the teacher did not know that he was being recorded. And since I dont think that the kid had a warrent....

What say you.

i say the kid was sposed to be taking notes and his tape recorder works as a note taking device so it is fair game....teachers in general are not allowed to put their "opinions" into factual lessons...dude should have kept his rants for when he got off work.

You have a point, but when a recording is going to used in court, or in any sort of a legal action, the person that is being recorded has the Right to know....

Sorry but a public school teacher paid with tax money does not need to be comparing our President to a Nazi. Should be fired imo. He is free to say that outside of the classroom all he wants. But not while being paid with tax money, and saying it to young kids who believe what their teachers say.

While the kid didn't do anything legally wrong I don't think (insofar as I know, face-to-face conversations can be secretly recorded by either party with no infringement on the tapee's rights in all 50 states - NOT the case with phone calls, though), it did violate scholastic ethics, as you're always supposed to get the professor's permission to tape him before taping any lecture he may give.

The kid may face expulsion. The professor may face being fired. But legally, I don't think anything wrong went down here... and if the executive or courts differ in that opinion, then perhaps the teacher had a point in some people feeling the US moving toward fascism after all.

Here's a funny real story. When i was small kid I had a record tape machine, mini size i was playing with often. One day it seems i had recorded the convo of my mother and my father related to one business partner of my father. I pushed play of the convo when this guy was in our house for dinner (i think) and he heard it and hell break! lol

Comparing Bush to Hitler is so wrong. Not only does it show a complete and utter lack of any perspective or historical knowledge, but it is also a complete f**king insult to people like my great grandparents that died in buchenvald.

Screw that teacher. He shouldn't be filling children's heads with his asinine and insulting drivel on the taxpayers money.

Michael, I won't disagree, but if you see the article says "remarks he made about President Bush in class, including that some people compare Bush to Adolf Hitler."

some people compare him with hitler. It doens't say he compared him. Not sure how accurate is msn on this, but it's totally different thing; unless this is something you must prohibit a teacher to tell.

Did you listen to the recording? (click the play video link on that msn page).

I truly, deeply dislike and distrust Bush, but his remarks were pretty intense for a highschool teacher and you can here the frustration and anger in his voice... if I was a parent with a differing point of view, I might be a little pissed (after I punched myself in the nuts 3000 times for being such an asshat).

PS: I hope that kid can't get a date to prom because of this. but I'm angry and cynnical like that.

It's an insult to all Hitler lovers and neo-nazi's everywhere.

Hitler was at least smart. He wouldn't have fucked up the takeover of a dickwad country like Iraq. We'd be floating in oil if Bush had a tenth of Hitker's skills.

The millenial kids are all little brownshirts anyway. Never trust a kid. They're all so used to dog sniffing and drug tests they take informing and tape recording lefty teachers for granted.

well if political opinion should be kept out then so should religion. which does not happen.

also, they sshould teahc the real history of this country the way it went down with the settlers and subsequent calvalry taking the land from the indians and raping their women, and throwing them on reservations by force.

I heard it. Not sure how to tell it to you to see the difference. When I was in high school (greece) such voices/opinions by teachers were common. Students were expressing their own and a dialogue was taking place. It could involved the country's pm, president, church, god, war whatever. If this guy was mainly brainwashing high school students expell him. If he was giving stand for a dialogue reward him; unless of course you want your sons and daughters their students to be readers of books and nothing else. That's another story.

Where he could then say, "I rest my case"; proving that he was on the mark.. which is why little would be done in the courts..

Some of the comparison of Bush and Hitler are indeed valid.

Hitler made up shit about Poland so he could inavde and Bush did the same about Iraq. And don't say he didn't. If he didn't where are the WMDs? Where is the proof that Saddam was involved in 9-11?

Where did you hear he was a geography teacher?

"who has been teaching social studies and American history at Overland since 2000"

It would be interesting to read a transcript of the tape. The article doesn't state that the teacher was comparing Bush to Hitler but "some people compare Bush to Adolf Hitler." and that is a very true statement.

There's no telling by this article what the teacher was actually saying.

AAh ...all the uninformed who have not looked into the facts of this story.

1) The ?teacher? is the only "nazi" in this case. He is not supposed to force "his" political agenda down the throats of a bunch of "captive", impressionable high school students. He has a curriculum from the school to teach g e o g r a p h y ....not politics and it was shown that he was doing more preaching than teaching.

2) It was school policy that taping of classes was ok. This varies from school to school. The kid was there to learn geography not be told, Bush is like Hitler, the 9-11 attacks were justified, America is a terrorist nation, and Bush sucks.

3) He is a position of power over students and it is an ethical violation to force his subjective political viewpoints on the kids under penalty of bad grades or worse if they speak up. The student reported that about 20% of the class time was spent on geography and the remainder on political diatribes.

4) It was not the first time the teacher has been reported for using the classroom as his personal politcal forum.

My congrats to Sean Allen for not being a sheep and shutting this "teacher?" down.
