Just out of ordinary caution. Never open .exe files you don't know the origin of. It's easy to embed trojans in these executables and you can raise hell on your own machine and network.
Whas it good though? |

ok people, no worries, this thing is virus free, no lame-ass MP3 proggy or any sort of annoyance.
it's a quite impressive Direct3D animation that uses some sort of incredible compression to compress 1.9 GB of data into 65KB. check it out, but make sure you save your work, minimize all windows and have DirectX 8 installed. |

It probably came from these folks, dunno who they are or what they do but they have a zip file with a readme that popped up in a search.
http://www.farb-rausch.com/ I have a hard enough time convincing myself to start internet explorer, let alone things written by people named chaos, fiver2 and yoda ( http://gamkiller.zext.net/coding/64kDemo/readme.txt ) cheers |

Still got my source somewhere...

it's a 64k demo, you can get it here: http://gamkiller.zext.net/coding/64kDemo/ , and there's no viruses in it.
it's not a 30,000:1 compression ratio either. it's not an animation. it's a rendered demo just like any 3D video game, only the code/music/textures/models/etc. are all compressed into 64kb... mostly by creating textures and models on the fly via computer algorithms. even the music is generated via a digitial-midi-type music format, where every bass drum or snare is only stored once and regenerated on the fly, as it's being played. just like the music in unreal tournament, and any video game with music that isn't previously stored in mp3. haven't you heard of the demo scene? check it out the scene (and more demos) here: (a very very old page that explains demos): http://www.oldskool.org/demos/explained/ (a newer page): http://www.scene.org/ |

and for all you who are scared of viruses, check out the demo scene and you'll see that there are none because these are all entered into contests and probably 100,000 people have already downloaded this demo before. if you don't download it, you're missing out! (i virus scan everything anyway; just updated norton and there's no viruses in it). |

I read more on it and acutally it's not *that* impressive at all. The program is coded in assembly, and uses DirectX's engine to render the entire movie - all they basically did was to implement the vectors and algorithms ... but don't fucking ask me how the coded the textures and the sound in it ... freaking amazing.
and for all you pussies who don't wanna run it -> Redshoe, you might not have DirectX8 installed (comes with XP, or get it at m$.com) ... |

You said it uses the DirectX engine - do you mean that DirectX manages which polys are in the view space and need to be drawn? I know that DirectX can handle all the calculations of the points (conversion from 3D -> the 2D screen), and the rotation of all points, but you need a lot more than this to make a full 3D engine. And, that's a lot of different effects and camera movements to all stuff in 64kb. For all who don't want to run the .exe, go find it on a demo scene download site in which 1000's of people have already downloaded the demo. They will surely know if the thing has a virus. Scanning it with the latest virus-scan software doesn't hurt, either. |

Granted, a full 3D engine takes a lot of work (most devs outsource to a templated engine nowadays and modify it to suit, especially in client->server games), but this coder was aiming for (a) speed and (b) compression. Even if he used point sprites for some of it, the file size wouldn't be that huge. Map a texture using the vertices of three points onto a poly, and presto - you have a textured surface. If I remember correctly Quote:
BTW this is called a "left hand view matrix" - and camera flybys can be made in an extremely small amount of space. This is an impressive bit of coding.

Railz,
You are quite correct. You could use a spline to generate the inbetween points of the camera movement (which i know is just a simple position and view direction verctor), which means the camera motion is not much code/data at all. I know that DirectDraw is pretty powerful, but you still can't just make a full 3D engine out of it. Demos are sneaky, sometimes, and they have things pre-programmed, so you do not need a full 3D engine, since they know the camera will never turn around. I see a few bugs in the demo already, with the sky textures - it's not drawing the polys on the edges like it should. It looks like it's not calculating which polys should be drawn properly (like they have the view space too small). All the textures of the polys and point sprites would be generatied viq algorithms, so no lost space there. |

I agree about not wanting to open an .exe off of a link from GFY. But if you know about the demo scene, you'll know what these groups program these things for. Plus, it's always best to scan the thing for viruses, anyway - I do that no matter where I get something from, since most people who have viruses don't know that they have viruses.
How about if i take some screen shots and post them here? How do you grab screen shots from the 3d-card using DirectX, anyone? |
