Very tragic. A part of a mountain just went down and covered the entire community, including the school, a health center and approximately hundreds of presumed dead people.

This is another case of people ignoring clear warnings of impending disaster.

The area where this town is, rather was, had a lot of illegal tree logging going on for years. They'd stripped the mountain bare and left an accident waiting to happen. The government knew about it as did the people below. The town was actually warned a landslide could happen at any time because of heavy rains earlier in the week. Some people left and waited and then said fuck it probably isn't going to happen and came back.

The whole town should have beeen evacuated. They had plenty of time and advance warning. Instead the government fucked up and at the same time the people fucked up by doubt the risks.

There are so many cases of stuff like this now worldwide its discraceful. People just don't heed the warning signs and as a result thousands get killed.

20 Million people in Kenya are dying because of no rainfall for so long the watering holes have all evaporated. Cattle and animals all dead or dying a slow death. And these people are just standing still expecting it to eventually start raining. This is insanity at its finest. The UN needs to go in and tell these folks its not happening. The weather is fucked up. No rain is coming. Move out and find a new home somewhere else. Makes me sick to my stomach watching this news report showing literally millions of little kids just being left to dehydrate and fry in the hot sun often with no shelter whatsoever. And they show these stupid fucking aid workers delivering token water that works out to a glass a day for drinking, the animals, and washing. That's not a solution its just prolonging the agony and suffering.

The world can not afford to keep ignoring this stuff impacting millions of people.

It covered dead people? Doesn't sound too serious then.

He's in Cebu, an island in the same central cluster of islands as Leyte where the landslides occurred. Since there's no reports of landslides in Cebu, he should be okay. It's been raining very hard in that region of the Philippines lately.

KRL was referring to the rampant illegal logging. In a majority of the areas in the Philippines that experience mudslides, landslides, and mass flooding, much of the hillside areas are logged heavily. This destroys a natural water brake and the mudslides are the result. It happens almost every 2 to 3 years now. The last time it happened on a large scale was in Real, Quezon in the northern island of Luzon.

Truth be told, the blame for the Saint Bernard, Leyte mudslide should probably not all fall on illegal logging but also on the fact that the town was located in a very low and flat catchbasin as well as the geologic nature of the soil in that region (igneous rock that 'pushes water back' after saturation). There's also a minor earthquake before the mudslide which probably factors into the equation as well.

When he heard the news, he left immediately last friday. He is in the general area ( 10 hours by boat ) ... and is there right now saving lives. He felt the sentiments of all the casualties and want to help them as he could. He packed up food and gave them water. Helped the young and old ones by giving them comfort and money. He even went to the main location where the landslide took place and even help the rescue team to dig for the remaining victims who have been buried. He said it was a terrible place like hell. He doesn't care the smell, muds, the dead people, all he cares is to help his fellowmen. He's really a kindhearted fellow.

Cool. I was referring to this part of his post:

"This is another case of people ignoring clear warnings of impending disaster.

yeah so true.. must really be the soil component and rock structure, i heard there is also a fault line... I don't think it's a good idea to build house there..

And the place is named St Bernard.. this is because the landslide thing happened before and the St. Bernard dogs were very helpful in finding the victims..

here's the link:

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/as...ide/index.html

So far, 72 bodies have been found on the southern Philippine island of Leyte, the Philippine disaster relief agency PDRT said Sunday. The death toll is expected to reach nearly 1,000.

I am ok .... As soon as we heard the news on Friday afternoon we packed water and food and boarded a boat for a short 10 hour boat ride to Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte.

No signs of life...

according to a major philippines newspaper, Only 65 bodies have been recovered so far. Estimates of the number of people still buried range from 1,400 to between 2,000 and 3,000, and hopes are fading that any of them are still alive.

some pics i got from google

The sad part is that rain has just started to pour in for the next 6 months
as predicted by the local weather bureau due to the effects of La Nina.
Kinda weird since normally summer season starts as early as March til May.
So the government is still expecting more landslides to occur but this
tragedy has lead to the awareness of the entire people to be prepared
at all times. We just hope and pray these these combined international
efforts lead by US, Japan, Spain, etc. will lead to rescue of more survivors.

yes, Phil. soldiers were in the frontline since day one.

Hundreds of Philippine and foreign rescuers are working
to locate and dig down to the village school and the
community hall, the main focuses of the operation.

The Leyte Governor said 122 bodies had been recovered
while the Philippine Red Cross said 94 bodies and 11
body parts had been recovered. It said 1,027 people
were missing.
