:stop The Work Ethic - Weekend Business Thread

Anyone still adhering to the seemingly outdated concept of the work ethic? Anyone still believe the way to find reward and success in life is through devotion to hard work, duty, thrift, self-discipline, and responsibility?

So many in this industry work for themselves; no one ?signs their checks? as it were?and I thought I might start some threads to see how the employers among us frequenting the forums value focused performance, duty, thrift, and self-discipline coupled with original thought, innovation and above all loyalty?I mean, consider for a moment the concept of diligence?an employee can occupy their seat every day fulfilling the required time element in your manual and accomplish a level of performance sufficient for that position. If they are on time every morning, adhere to the break and lunch schedules, leave at the allowed time and fulfill their required responsibilities?I suppose they are diligent employees. Now imagine you have another employee who meets these same required duties, but also exhibits imagination, resourcefulness, suggests efficiencies, encourages and educates others?

Are they more valuable to you and your organization? Do they earn a premium? Or in today?s era of outsourcing do you laugh to yourself and tell your peers you?re going to let them go on at that pace until they burn themselves out and you?ll hire a few people offshore to take their place?

Both types of employees have always existed and the later is the one that ussually got the promotion or moved ahead in the company.

Now on to your questions.

Are they more valuable to you and your organization?
I personally feel all employees should be valuable to an organization, though each position has its own value. Of course that person could be worth more as they advance in the company but they were hired for and are currently filling a job that has a current value.

Do they earn a premium?
No they are just more likely to advance and then earn a higher wage or salary.

Or in today?s era of outsourcing do you laugh to yourself and tell your peers you?re going to let them go on at that pace until they burn themselves out and you?ll hire a few people offshore to take their place?
I think you do not have the same thoughts on outsourcing as I do. So I can not answer this one. I do not find that outsourcing harms an organization nor the economy and I do not see it as a threat or a way just to replace people.

And yes I still believe in a work ethic.
