Just following doctor's orders
I went to dinner with my daughter last night, and she told me this story that I thought was pretty funny.
First, a little background: Apparently, at some point in her life she was exposed to TB. As she has been working with children ever since she was a teen, she has had to get the standard TB tests, where they stick you in the arm with a taste, then have you come back and look to see what happens. For her, the result was always a big welt (positive reading) but doctors always attributed it to something else. About 4 months ago she went to a doctor that decided this wasn't something to be blown off, and they put her on some medication that she needs to take for 6-9 months. The doctor and pharmacist both stressed to her: absolutely no alcohol, that means no cough syrup that has alcohol, no aspirin, and whatever the active ingredient that makes Tylenol work. But especially, under no circumstances was she to consume alcohol. After the first month she went in for her checkup, and she was asked, "any alcohol or aspirin?" Nope, none. "Are you sure?" Yes. Second month, "any alcohol or aspirin?" Nope, none. "Are you sure?" Yes. Third month, "any alcohol or aspirin?" Nope, none. "Are you sure?" Yes. She just went in for another checkup, and her regular doctor was not available so she saw a different one. "Any alcohol or aspirin?" Nope, none. "Wait, are you saying you have not had any alcohol in 4 months?" Yes. "How much did you drink before the prescription?" Oh, one or two drinks a month. "You are in college, we don't expect anyone to actually listen to us. Feel free to resume your normal drinking pattern." |
