Myspace beats Google?!

Just over 2 years old, MySpace now has 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google Inc.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060212/...g_online_space

WTF?! 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google?! Fucking impressive.

Yeah more like News Group are saying that it has 2 and a half times the traffic to push their share price up. That story was written by ANICK JESDANUN, AP Internet Writer - Associated Press who are part owned by News Group.

Do you really think Alexa is a valid traffic ranking system? I mean sure mayeb in the general neighborhood but I think over the years its become much less relevent.

Lol you have got to be joking? Are you sure they own part of the Associated Press? I think they just own Fox news and some financial news agencies.

They own alot, but I don't think they own any of the AP. Here are a few companies they own: 20th Century Fox, FOX, FX, Speed Channel, National Geographic Channel, DirectTV, The Sun, The Times, a ton of Austrailian Newspapers, New York Post, HarperCollins Publishers, ign.com (thats gamespy and all that),

Yeah, some countries are a little weak, but a bunch of countries like the UK and Germany have a strong user base, and on top of that the growth is increasing rapidly in other countries. By December you won't be asking that question.

I look at MySpace kind of like AIM or ICQ. Thats what people do with it, chat, share pictures, and meet new people. They aren't the next Google because its completely 100% different.

Alexa is the worlds best traffic ranking system on the net. Just ask any real webmaster. Alexa says traffic rank for Google is #3 while myspace falls at #7. >> Source << The info in that Yahoo! article is biased.

The google toolbar also sends info to Alexa. read the small print when you install it.

Bullshit, of course they do. Look at any popular community in any country. Members design their own homepages and make them extremely personal. They all sit by the computer all day every day anyway - what's there to do but that and chat on icq/msn?

The Internet has a rising star whose name isn't Google. Just over 2 years old, MySpace now has 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google Inc., and it quickly eclipsed Friendster as the top social-networking site where users build larger and larger circles of friends.

POP QUIZ : Could YOUR hosting company handle that kind of traffic?

I wrote a note to that writer.

Anick,
The article you wrote was well done, with one exception.

?In Middletown, Conn., police suspect that as many as seven teenage girls recently were fondled or had consensual sex with men they met on MySpace who turned out to be older than they claimed.?

There?s a larger problem, and one that I haven?t seen touched on in the recent articles published about MySpace. If you dig deeper, you will find a much more troubling problem of young underage girls who are stating ages older than they are. Such as 14 year olds stating their age as 26 years old. The problem with the way this article has been written, is that it artificially puts society on edge and inflates the danger people automatically associate with interacting with others online. It also puts a false assumption in the heads of readers about men online.

The problem is that these types of articles present a ?scare factor? that exists solely for the purposes of generating attention, and ratings in the media. Perhaps it should be said that when you put 54 million people together, such as on Myspace, you will inevitably have bad things that happen ? along with the good. This is how society works, in real life or online. There are a lot of wonderful people online, and there are a few bad apples as well. This does NOT mean that people should be afraid of meeting people online, but by putting a spin on an article talking about how young girls are being absued, that?s exactly what otherwise uninformed people come to assume.

I see articles and stories constantly published discussing the dangers of meeting people from online. The dangers of meeting people online are real, but not more so than the dangers of meeting people in real life. I think it would only be fair if within these articles, there could be some kind of clarity that puts a positive spin on online social interaction.

I?m just tired of people I meet online being afraid of meeting in real life because they?ve read a few too many negative news articles. I do realize this ?negative spin? sells the news, but I believe media companies should understand how publishing negative news can make people paranoid in a way that does not benefit anyone.

-Noah

that doesnt sound like an unreasonable number.. people go to google to find something and leave.. i might use it 50-100 times a day a few seconds at a time = less than a half hour.. just to change your profile and fix shit especially with the erros and shit takes about an hour on myspace, then if your looking around for people and at profiles, you might spend upwards of 2 hours a day more if your a myspace junkie .. because its all page based it means surfing time=traffic..

A lot of interesting points of view. Many wrong, but hey. Not everyone can see the impact. MySpace, if they do not fix their code, and infrastructure will be their undoing. All the daily errors, and different shit you go through on there.

To get that many people to change the channel, you are going to either need a series of serious fuck ups, or someone who can do it better. Right now, there is nothing close. However, it would not suprise me if Google's tinfoil hats are working on some 'community" or "portal" right now.

Interesting read..

Yeah...and people believe those polls where 10000 people reflect the opinion of several hundred million people in that country.
I assume the % of alexa/google toolbar users is enough to give the numbers pretty good accuracy. Not exact, but pretty good.

2 hours a day or more is a pretty broad scale... for more leverage to your point I'd of said 6 hours a day or more. People at work, at school or sitting on their ass at home, can spend their entire day on myspace, and be clicking out their ass the whole time.
