I don't think the world has seen this much retaliatory Islamic violence since who knows when.

Danish embassies and properties around the world have been targeted. Even Danes themselves.

Sam Donaldson said it best on This Week. He said basically that just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean it's right to do it.

As a political cartoonist for almost 30 years I can tell you I would never have targeted Muhammed as a caricature because I know from history courses it would send the Islamics off. I remember a movie from the '70s that showed an actor playing Muhammed and the muslims went ape over it. It even starred Anthony Quinn!

This cartoon controversy is just what the Al Queda and Bin Laden's needed to show how insensitive the west is. Just another excuse to start shit.

If this controversy continues into next week, you can bet that's only the beginning. The Islamics aren't going to let it rest until a major apology by the governments that ran the toon come forward and then some.

I'm for freedom of expression. Its laughable how some Muslims can get their gotch in notch over a cartoon. Maybe it shows how stupid their extremist views are. Religious extremism is ugly. Ever see the movie "Various Positions"? In it, an extremist Orthodox Jew in charge of a Jewish Cemetery learned of an elderly woman buried there who they thought had converted to Judaism in the end. It turns out she hadn't, they learned, and this asshole wanted to either have her body moved, or was willing to move all the Jews out of the cemetery so they could 'rest in peace.' Apparently, they couldn't 'rest in peace' being buried in the same cemetary as a goy (a non-Jew). I have heard of similar REAL-LIFE happenings. This is a real sickness, attitudes such as these. Do I feel sorry for extremist Muslims who so easily resort to violence? Hell no. They can go fuck themselves. They live in a world with other humans who do not share their strict fundamentalist views. If they can't get along, they can fuck off.

Well violence regarding toons ain't new. The history of editorial cartoons in the U.S. is marred with violence. You get told that in journalism school as well as on the job before pen hits paper. The Civil War had some toons that sent people to lynching others as well as other acts of violence. Riots too.

The introduction of evolution brought about violence. Civil Rights era of the 50s and 60s too. You guys should see some of the toons from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Racist as hell. Made more fun of the Irish and Asians and Blacks. In mainstream syndicates at that!

Oh they made this Muhammed toon look like an adventure of Bazooka Joe in comparison.

That's a damn good point! No one is bringing up what I've been protesting with my website for years.

You're in a country, you do something there, your government is responsible to a greater or lesser degree. That government presides over your actions. Whether you agree with the government or not and vice versa. Those countries involved had it's citizens engage in an action or actions that resulted in global conflict. Each government should address the issue with an apology but not as an excuse.

The stimulus-response reaction by the Islamic public is evident that they're upset. A calming word or two from each government explaining their viewpoint and an apology that they didn't mean to offend isn't backing down. It's addressing the issue and perhaps a better step to educating the muslim world that whether they agree or like it or not this is how our societies conduct themselves. And that goes both ways. If the toons were meant to be derogatory I can understand the turmoil, yet from what I've seen they weren't derogatory. It's not like when I grew up in the 60's and 70's and they still ran cartoons on kids shows with derogatory attacks against every ethnic group there is.
