I've lived in Germany for 16 years ... according to my level of knowledge it's pretty hard to get a "real" gun. You know, you gotta get your license, go throught a bunch of tests and shit.... maybe it wasn't that bad where I grew up - although Frankfurt was jsut 30 min away.

the point was, guns are not the ultimate in killing efficiency.... there are much more efficient ways to eliminate people, regardless of how many times they may or may not have been actually used. It's very much easier to point a gun and pull a trigger, than getting up close and personal and, for instance, sticking a knife in someone, or strangling someone, or beating their brains out with a baseball bat.

Holding a gun makes the killing a very detached, impersonal thing. A kid could do it. A kid just did.
Also, a gun being the efficient killing weapon it is, it's a lot easier to wipe out a whole bunch of people with a gun, than it is with a knife or a baseball bat.

If that kid walked into that school building today with a knife or a baseball bat, there wouldn't have been as many deaths. With a grenade, maybe more, but they aren't that easy to come by.

I grew up in a very violent country, and I grew up with guns. I can handle a gun, but I'm very happy that I now live in a country with strict gun-laws. I have a healthy respect for guns, and a pretty healthy fear as well, because I've seen too many accidents happen.

Amp, I would agree with that, but firearms are horrendously efficient at taking human life, and when you put them into a civilian environment, without all the disciplines of the military environment they're made for, they're misused. If firearms were still single shot weapons that took time to reload you could make the case for hunting and self-defence, but the weapons we have today are far too efficient for that.

If that kid walked into that school building today with a knife or a baseball bat, there wouldn't have been as many deaths. With a grenade, maybe more, but they aren't that easy to come by. I grew up in a very violent country, and I grew up with guns. I can handle a gun, but I'm very happy that I now live in a country with strict gun-laws. I'd choose something that makes a statement... like a flamethrower or maybe a hosing device to spray them down with hydrochloric acid.... much more visual impact, and just as efficient.
