What are you looking for in a hard drive? Speed? Storage Capacity? Price?

Seagate Seagate and Seagate.
I used to like WD's, but last couple years had too many failures.

Seagate schmeagate! 3 have already failed in as many months and yet another is periodically "pausing" (I can't tell which until the RAID manager flags it...)

250-300gb is the sweet spot in price with 250gb going for 100-110 and 300gb going for 130-140
250gb = ~2.5g/$1 300gb = ~2.3g/$1 400gb = ~1.9g/$1 500gb = ~1.4g/$1 these are based on newegg pricing i like the seagate because of the 5 year warranty but i have killed a seagate 250 and seagate 300 in the last year. still i find them more reliable than the competition and i dont get a factory reconditioned unit when i RMA a drive, unlike some companies (maxtor and maybe others). ive found that if i add a hdd cooler ~10-25 depending on style/brand/etc that i prolong the life of the drive.

I had two 120GB Western Digitals and I was happy. I got a good deal on two 200GB Maxtors and I'm not as happy. They make that grinding noise while doing something. How stupid is that?

Doesn't really matter if you get a Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, etc.... Everyone has had bad experiences with one of them at one point (the only 2 seagates that I have bought were both DOA). As far as drive specs, 16MB models are going to be faster than the 8MB models. Sata is going to have a faster thoroughput IDE. Besides that, just go with what gets you the most GB vs. $.
On a side note, I would recommend taking a look at the new Hitachi drives. ![]()

western digital all the way! although it's all subjective, one thing is for sure, if a drive is to fail, it'll fail fast. I mean, crash test it for a few days when you buy it, if it's ok, chances are it'll stay ok.

Western Digital, Seagate. Just make sure and keep backups. All HD's fail.
