How do actors make themselves cry?

I was looking at a movie and it hit me... How the hell do they do that on cue?

Do they throw some salt like substance in there eyes?
Stare at one object/light for a very long time?
Think about someone they love that died?

How do actors make themselves cry in movies?

Actors don't simply 'say' their lines, (well, the good ones, anyhow) put themselves in their roles emotionally, so what they're demonstrating are real emotions and reactions... I think the term is 'emotional availibility' or something.

Yeah, they don't really "make themselves cry"... they really feel what they're trying to portray through their acting.
The really good actors will truly become the person they are trying to be and will really do what that person would really do.

Others use visine drops

I can make myself cry at will. Have any of you really tried it?

And yes, onions for eyeballs does help. As does having brussel sprout testicles and a cocktail-stick penis. The tears rarely stop.

in all seriousness, if you want to see a movie with artificial tears, rent Dirty Love with Jenny McCarthy.

Real looking tears are usually eye drops (salt and onions usually make the eyes bloodshot).

For the really real tears, the actor/actress will live the script. Movie sets are not always factories for film, some of them have a huge personality. It's not uncommon for an actor/actress to be depressed after they finish a sad film.

After all, if you were getting paid that much, wouldn't you be able to squirt on cue?

To cry on cue, actors think of President Hillary. Then how fucked up the United States will be.

It's not that hard to do. Staying in that place mentally is.

What others have said is true. These actors get into the headspace of the characters they play. I was at a shoot for The Sopranos last week. James Gandolfini was a great guy, but once he got into character he was fucking scary. He locked eyes with me off camera during a few takes and scared the shit out of me. Cold sweat. That guy is GOOD.

When I was working on a film a while ago, the lead actress was having a hard time being convincing in a scene where she was supposed to be emotional and crying.

The director pulled her aside and laid into her, yelling at the top of his lungs what a worthless piece of shit she was, how she was a no talent bitch, etc.

She was shaking in distress from the lashing, about to explode in tears. He had someone immediately place her on spot and called "action". It ended up great.

If the actor/actress is good they become emotionally involved with the scene to the point where they don't need outside motivation.

In The Shinning, Kubrik would pull the lead actress aside at every take and slap her in the face to get her crying.

It was the only way she could cry for the camera apparently.

Funny part was, Kubrik was RENOWNED for take hundreds of takes of the same scene, so that woman's face must have taken one hell of a beating.

How many weeks ya want to spend on physical abuse?

Some actors/actresses as so shit hot (suppose that's why they are paid well) and can switch on with the snap of fingers and present a totally different face and manner totally remote from their real character. Sometimes, tho very rare, I've noticed this with models in shoots - they can be totally deadpan but once ya start shooting the whole face comes to life in a flash (literally!). I like em models cos ya always know in advance what you will end up with - ie every frame usable content.

Eye drops placed in the eye(s) by make-up folks just seconds before the camera shows the tear(s) oozing out? Think about it, haven't you noticed the edit cuts just before and just after the initial tears, which allow for the effect (and a re-loading of the actresses eyes for any follow-on dialogue that might be in the script)?????????????

they get all the motivation they can get with the help of a good director. tears are just easy to produce, but its the facial expression that will make the crying scene more plausible.

Sometimes depending on my emotional state of mind I can make myself cry, especially during fights with my boyfriend. I start thinking about how I was wronged and deceived and fucked over in the past and I can "will" myself to feel those emotions again and cry more, but I can't do it all the time. Sometimes I will "will" myself to cry more so I get more sympathy during a fight

I think I could be a good actress but I need to learn how to "tap" those emotions on call, I can't do it yet, I can do it bette when I'm in an emotional state of mind.

Sometimes I used to fantasize about certain things (like daydreams) and would get so immersed in the character that I can feel everything that I as a character would feel, and I could make myself cry too. If you do it a lot it can be emotionally draining, but it can be cathartic too.

I think in some acting schools that's what they make you do. You have to think of unpleasant things that happened in your life and call on those emotions and pretend you're feeling those feelings all over again to make yourself cry, I think that's called "method acting".

Yah, I loved that movie.

He said he hates always being typecast into those roles, but that is what he's best at. He has the stature and attitude for the alpha male/hired muscle type parts.

well basically, what actors really do is to think of a sad thing that happened once in their life, or sometimes they got carried away in the movie. From what i heard, they do this certain "internalization" before they take their scenes. That is putting thair feet onto their character's shoes.

some people doesnt find anything hard in cryin , including me, because im am really a cry-baby, i can cry for small things, or just for some petty reasons,

If other people can sing or dance, then I guess others also have a skill on how to act and make themselves cry in front of the camera.
