Iran to publish Holocaust cartoons
From: Agence France-Presse
From correspondents in Tehran

February 07, 2006

IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.

He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said.

Iran's fiercely anti-Israeli regime is supportive of so-called Holocaust revisionist historians, who maintain the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as well as other groups during World War II has been either invented or exaggerated.

Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prompted international anger when he dismissed the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as a "myth" used to justify the creation of Israel.

Mr Mortazavi said tomorrow's edition of the paper will invite cartoonists to enter the competition, with "private individuals" offering gold coins to the best 12 artists - the same number of cartoons that appeared in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Last week, the Iranian foreign ministry also invited British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Teheran to take part in a planned conference on the Holocaust, even though the idea has been branded by Mr Blair as "shocking, ridiculous, stupid".

Mr Blair also said Mr Ahmadinejad "should come and see the evidence of the Holocaust himself in the countries of Europe", to which Iran responded by saying it was willing to send a team of "independent investigators".

Exactly. I'm actually very glad that they're doing this.

It will CLEARLY demonstrate the difference between countries run by muslims, and countries run by human beings that have fully evolved into civilized creatures.......

Besides, how fucking funny could a cartoon from Iran POSSIBLY be? Buahaha!

Would these happen to be the same Iranians that are all pissed off because the world doesn't want them to have nuclear capabilities? Haha...

This whole situation has me laughing my ass off. These people are like the little cocky kid in school that enjoyed taunting the bigger kids thinking they would never retaliate. Yeh, right...

That's funny actually... Why in the hell did we ever invade Iraq? What the hell was Iran doing before Iraq?

I don't see how they can be so furious of the cartoons if they are going to allow it to happen in reverse.

Im fucking sick of the whole thing - Ive found myself saying things about muslims in the last week or so that I actually dont like myself for.

They need to fucking get a grip and sort it out amongst themselves. The moderate muslims say its just a small minority - in that case why dont they shut the fuckers up before we go in and shut the whole fucking lot of them up.

Back in November Turkish press tried to get back at those horribly offending Danes with a counter-caricature of Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen in bed with PKK leader/terrorist Abdullah Ocalan:

Quote:
The issue of Tempo magazine which is scheduled to hit the stands today carries an striking caricature: Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen and now-imprisoned PKK leader Apo, lying in bed together, completely naked! And what's more, they are watching Roj TV from their bed.

This is a very carefully drawn caricature.

The editors of Tempo are claiming that they are running a caricature like this in order to "test freedom of the press."

And I am really curious about what will happen. Let's see how Denmark, which spends much time championing freedom of the press, greets this caricature!

Honestly Europe doesn't have free speech anyway. I was kind of suprised that noone was charged over these Prophet cartoons, I guess they were lucky that they were too high profile and in the media. I do find it ironic though all these Government leaders coming out saying 'Free Expression is the European way' when people have similarly criticised Islam have ended up on trial in some of these nations.

Read this article for example and you will see what I mean, this was written prior to the whole cartoon uproar:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...400110,00.html

Quote:
Ha ha! You canhahaha8217;t insult Islam but I can

One of the two statements below may soon be illegal; the other will still be within the law. You have to decide which is which and explain, with the aid of a diagram, the logic behind the new provision. a) Stoning women to death for adultery is barbaric. b) People who believe it is right to stone women to death for adultery are barbaric.

The answer is that a) should be fine and b) may land you in court charged with inciting religious hatred against Islam, under new provisions in David Blunketthahaha8217;s Serious Organised Crime and Police Bill.
Now read this article of an example of someone being charged for using their supposed right to free expression.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...025181,00.html

Quote:
The CPS has said that it wishes both cases to be retried, as well it might considering the enormous amount of money expended so far. West Yorkshire police proudly announced that they had a team of officers working on the case ?five days a week, 10 hours a day?.

I?m not sure how many police officers constitute a ?team? and West Yorkshire police are disinclined to tell me. But I reckon it?s been a good time to be a burglar in West Yorkshire just recently.

One assumes that the team of police has been painstaking in its efforts to unearth evidence of Griffin being beastly about Islam; certainly there was some minutiae of perhaps questionable relevance dragged into the case against him. At one point he was cross-examined over his reference to Stephen Lawrence, the black lad murdered, allegedly by racists, in southeast London.

Griffin apparently referred to him in a speech as ?Stephen bloody Lawrence?, which is unkind and even tasteless, but scarcely the sort of thing for which one should be bunged in chokey. The most serious charge against him ? that he referred to Islam as a ?wicked, vicious faith? ? is still outstanding. Last year the Home Office told me that I could probably get away with calling Islam a ?wicked, vicious faith? in a nice column in The Sunday Times, but Nick Griffin probably couldn?t. It all seems a bit harsh on Griffin, though. Why should he be prosecuted for telling people what he thinks of Islam if I?m allowed to get away with it? Person-specific crimes: it will never catch on.
Free speech has never existed in Europe in the same way it does in the USA (with regards to politically offensive speech particularly, not porn). So it's kind of suprising they are championing this right so much over the past couple weeks.

Read this article for example and you will see what I mean, this was written prior to the whole cartoon uproar:

Now read this article of an example of someone being charged for using their supposed right to free expression.

Free speech has never existed in Europe in the same way it does in the USA (with regards to politically offensive speech particularly, not porn). So it's kind of suprising they are championing this right so much over the past couple weeks.
well the first example is of a law that hasn't passed yet.. and the second story the guy was found not guilty (although there are still some outstanding charges)..

So I don't see how this shows there's never been freedom of speech?

this will be just like Iraq:
US bombing Iraq and Iraq in return bombing Israel.
and Israel NOT attacking Iraq.

this will happen with Iran as well.

can't the world realize this a problem that needs to be issued@!@!?

Do not loose faith in them yet... their last successful embassy takeover was 27 years ago, they are just a bit rusty, and needed to practice their arsonist skills

My point is that the Arabs do have a point about the Holocaust denial for example. Whilst there is a case for havign some law in place in Germany (although I don't support the law at all), why in other European countries for example should it be illegal to question the Holocaust and offend Jewish people but fine to offend Islam? I am not advocating that we should now make it illegal to offend Islam also (like is already the case in some European countries despite what you may be lead to believe after this cartoon stuff), what I am arguing is for an American style of free speech (and this isn't a compliment to GWB, but rather to the founding fathers of America).

The second article there, although you are correct he was found not guilty and is under retrial, shows the huge double standard on this issue of free speech in Britian, in that they will dedicate an entire unit of police to tracking down one man for saying something about Islam being a vicious faith, which if it were said by someone else (i.e. someone in a newspaper) it would not even get notice.

I know Europeans have a tendacy to take offence when compared to America in a poor way, but think openly about the issue. Free speech in Europe is certainly not clearly defined, and there is a number of topics, whilst offensive yes, that are made illegal which under the American Constitutional model would be allowed. What I believe is that the American model is one that we should all support and demand, not some model that condemns certain forms of expression because they may be offensive.

I think this article is an excellent summary and I'd suggest you read it http://www.sundayherald.com/53960 It ends with this:

Quote:
I?m not sure where this goes now. But one thing is certain, it won?t be resolved in the courts. I don?t know what is worse, the historian David Irving being charged in Austria with Holocaust denial for a speech he made 17 years ago; the Muslim cleric Abu Hamza on trial in London for inciting racial hatred; or the Crown Prosecution Service?s decision to retry the BNP leader, Nick Griffin. This way madness lies.

why drawing cartoons denying Holocaust is not ok and cartoons laughing about Islam is ok?
well, how about cartoon denying the 9/11 ?
personaly I don't have a problem with cartoons no matter what's the subject, but some will have a problem with it , don't you think?
