I am considering moving everything (including myself) to NYC and I have been looking online for apartments and such and keep getting confused about "Midtown". For reference, is St. Patrick's Cathedral considered Midtown West or Midtown East???

Thats EastSide ...so if you think about it you'd be moving on up to the EastSide to a Deluxe Apartment in the Sky....just remember that Fish don't fry in the kitchen...thats important...LOL

If you consider the suburbs in NJ. Theres Bergen County(Fort Lee) near George Washington Bridge. Or Hoboken, Weehaken, Jersey City near the Lincoln Tunnel( the tunnel brings you more down town)

. Now I can't remember where I found the damn listing in the first place.

Take a look way downtown in the financial district. 99 John st. is a good building.

You get a lot of Apt for your $$$$$

I was living over by FIT for a while, talk about a school full of sluts. My favorite location was 4th and Bwy, always something going on. Well, Ludlow street was good to live on also.

Yeah, totally bro...nice area. Also West End Ave, Riverside Drive. Stay away from the East Side. The Village has some beautiful areas too.

I'm happy in Queens...Sunnyside/Woodside/Forest Hills/Bayside, more mellow out here but still some fun bars. I'm 15 - 20 minutes in by train where I am, but Bayside would be a haul.

In Brooklyn Williamsburg is popular, but always slammed for being too full of trust fund kids. That's close to the East Village by train, but probably just as pricey as Manhattan.

Well, there are nice areas there, depends. Above 59th you can find great streets, between 59th and 14th there's too much traffic, etc. I'm from the West Side, so I got a basis ;-)

Your best bet is to take a weekend trip and walk the whole city. It sounds like a lot but if you are in decent shape it isn't bad. I have an aunt that lives on the UES at 78th st and I would sometimes walk back to my place on john st. That is over 100 blocks. Believe me you will get a feel for the city and be able to tell what neighborhood is right for you after this

My current basis is forget the city and hang in the boroughs, less hassle, great parking if you are in the right area. But I guess then you miss the whole Manhattan vibe.

What about the Lower East Side? That place is slammed with bars, chicks, whathaveyou

To be honest, that's exactly what I did a few months ago. At first, I had my eye on Times Square, then I saw a few Brownstones I liked over in Central Park West, then I found a couple in Midtown I really liked..... I've actually got hours of video from the trip with the different areas that I was interested in. If I can find the info again on this corner unit that overlooks St Patricks Cathedral and Rockefeller Plaza, that one is by far my first choice. If not, I'll probably throw a damn dart at a board or something

I know the feeling. Loads and loads of inventory in NYC. It can make you go crazy. I would stay away from times square if I were you. too many tourists and traffic. I love soho, Tribecca, Union Square

Can't understand how anyone could live in NYC.

That city has a big X on it just waiting to happen again. Plus traffic, traffic, traffic. Everyone's so abrupt, pushy and rushed. The pace is non-stop. Forget driving a car around without getting a migraine. Too many people. Just crazy.

I can handle NYC for about 2 days max, than I'm worn out and can't wait to get out.

But good luck on your new home.

That's one of the things that I like about it. The city never sleeps and there's always something going on. It's very much like myself; I'm usually going full bore like I'm way behind schedule (even if I'm not).

Just a few notes, nice apartments generally stay on the market in NYC for less than two weeks, so if you find one you like, you usually have to act very quickly. Be prepared to prove that you make 40-60 times the monthly rent per year, or have a guarantor who makes 80+ times the monthly rent. The usual policy is the standard 1 month's rent plus 2 months for security deposit.

Also, down near the financial district (John St, Nassau St, etc.) you will find a lot of good deals, but it's very quiet after 5PM (when wall st becomes a ghost town) and on the weekends. It has easy access to the rest of the city so it's actually really nice - it can be quiet if you want it to be, but it's certainly easy to go find "happening places" in soho, midtown and the meatpacking district.

That's true. My father worked in the garment district in the city and had a 2nd home there. He loved the non-stop hustle and bustle.

I think its a great city, just to fast for my comfort.
