Focus what you're good at and hire others for the rest is my motto.

It's so sad that I do know all those things. I really need a life :(

Can do most technical things myself, don't know how to use photoshop though.. my skills are mostly sys admin, software development & integration.

Know html & basic css stuff, but I use dreamweaver since it makes life a hell of a lot easier.

That's why I hire programmers.

I'll be honest, I consider Telnet the black screen of death for me. I always feel like I'm gonna crash the server everytime I have to use it.

mardigras 02-01-2006 10:31 AM

"Can you write html?"

Yes, and because of the way I learned I use no editors. It's strictly notepad except the occasion when the file is too large, then I use wordpad.

"Do you know your way around photoshop?"

Enough for my current needs but advancing is on my to do list :)

"How about ftp, telnet, scripts, and mysql dbs?"

Check on FTP, CHMOD, etc, I don't use telnet, I don't write php but I can set up a mysql database, install a script and have gotten comfortable enough around scripts I can extract just the parts I want to customize a page without breaking the rest:upsidedow

"You know anything about automation?"

Been tinkering with this a good bit lately. I Just modified and set up a calendar script for a nightclub's website that I maintain that takes the data and displays it in 4 locations on their site (today's events spotlighted at the top the main page, a list of the upcoming week's events also on the main page, a separate full schedule page and a calendar view). For other sites I have set up scripts to dole out random and daily items to give an appearance of "constantly updated" sometimes supplimented with 3rd party plugins.

"Do you know how to read your stats?"

Yep. I find especially interesting how people got to my site and what they were searching for.:thumbsup

"I'm curious. I'm curious if any of you actually know wtf a real webmaster is....."

I'm real. I can build a functional webpage. I don't know if I'm wtf:upsidedow

Sam Granger 02-01-2006 10:39 AM

Are you one? - yes

Can you write html? - yes (xhtml, css, tableless, you name it)

Do you know your way around photoshop? - yes

How about ftp, telnet, scripts, and mysql dbs? - yes, i could even upload through dos or cmd if needed. I know php a bit and sql

You know anything about automation? - yes

Do you know how to read your stats? - yes

Roald 02-01-2006 10:44 AM

I am just fucking around

GatorB 02-01-2006 10:59 AM

Whoc ares if someone is a "real" webmaster? Can I write HTML. yes. being a "real" webmaster I'm surpirsed you didn't ask about Xhtml or Css. Never used Photshop. I can and have used FTP. Don't jack shit about php, scripts, and mysql dbs. Don't really need to at this point. My method of making money doesn't actually require any of that. And in the end that's the bottom line. Of course I don't call myself a "webmaster" either. I consider myself more of salesman since basically what I do is get people to buy products and/or services for companies in which I am paid a comission.

Barefootsies 02-01-2006 11:25 AM

All of theee above.

:pimp

Anyone who has enough skill to make money is a webmaster. I don't code, I contract that and code is written to my specs. But I know seo and tons of other stuff not on that list and I make good money.

FlexxAeon 02-01-2006 04:54 PM

making money is great but it does not make someone a webmaster by definition, which is what i think Headless was getting at

They should. Using telnet, and frankly ftp, is just asking for trouble.

How many of you have your mysql db's open to the world? How many of you even know how you would know?
