My server crashes whenever someone farts

And I am fucking tired of it, Ive been with an adult industry leading webhost(or so they claim) for about a year now and whenever a big site links to me mysql crashes and burns. I get about 50k unique hits per day/150k pageviews and the server has 1GB memory(mainly for mysql). This shit shouldnt crash when I start getting like a 10k unique spike per hour should it? Makes me sick to wake up and find the site has been down, I am hesitant to say which company it is because they just fucking make excuses on here and say oh we will fix it etc then they bury the thread. I need a company that will work for me the customer. Get with the fucking program please.

Well it is unmanaged but I would think the default would be able to handle most loads, I guess not. Who is it? Well its not your company obviously

Our servers are fart proof*

* I've never actually had the inclination nor need to fart on or near any of our servers, but I'm sure someone has indeed done so at one time or another. No reports of downtime because of said wind breakage have, to my knowledge, ever been reported.

it may not be your server. there are some *really* terrible scripts out there. i've seen some scripts hit mysql 5, even 10 times per hit. a lot of developers have no clue how to write code for low traffic sites much less moderate to high. chances are you just need to figure out how to hit mysql less. at 10k hits per hour, that's 2.7 web hits per second. any server should be able to handle that. my old pII-400 is overpowered for that shit.

i really doubt the server is the problem.

Default configs are no good, mysql has to be optimized, as well as web server, and a few other things to handle spikes like that. If it's unmanaged, unlikely they'll move their finger to handle the issue.

1. The script I use is my own and it does 1 database call per page.
2. Its not on Windows
3. I asked the host to tweak the Mysql for spikes and they replied they did.
4. I think they lied to me about tweaking and I guess I get what I pay for.
5. Time to move to a serious host, then and only then will I expose this host that has lots me thousands of dollars. Sigh.

Thansk to whoever started that webhost poll, I think from reading it I got who I want to go with.

Try increasing your MySQL memcache, if your box has enough RAM. There are other things you can do, but if you're on all default configs, that will make the most of a difference.

Are you looking for a replacement dedicated or shared host?

Replacement dedicated.
Currently I pay $200 a month now for 1300GB transfer - the machine has 1GB memory and ten ips.

Question.

If this company is costing you thousands of dollars due to downtime, why don't you spend a little extra and go with a managed service? I understand that you're upset about your servers having troubles, but you ARE using an unmanaged service, what exactly do you expect?

Go with a hosting company that manages your servers for you. You'll be much better off.

Yeah thats just the attitude I was looking for. Managed or Unmanaged(Ive paid for extra support to fix this exact problem several times btw including upgrading memory of course for a cost, and tweaking the mysql etc) a website should not crash under the weight of only 20k pageviews per hour should it? Is that asking so fucking much?

No, not asking much at all. Some folks here have given you good hosts to move to. Look into them. I personally like serverbeach and phatservers, but that may just be me and my experiences with them.

That being said, apache and mysql out of the gate need to be tweaked some for maximum love, but I don't think either should fall over at that traffic level.

When you say 'down' what do you mean? have you looked at the logs to see if there is any detail there?

Can/will you post them?

And, not to be a dick, but you writing your sql queries doesn't make you an expert. If you have huge non indexed tables and you're doing a SELECT * FROM whatever and munging the return...yeah, you could have problems.

No, it isn't asking "so fucking much". No need to get so defensive. I'm simply stating that the companies who specialize in unmanaged servers are not going to be as willing to help you out with your problems as a company who specializes in managed servers. I'm not sure why you're getting so testy with me.

I paid for support on the unmanaged server for this exact problem, what part of PAID FOR SUPPORT dont you understand? Regardless if it is managed or unmanaged you should have the problem FIXED if you PAY? I am getting defensive with you because you assert since it is unmanaged that when I call and pay for technical support I should be told to move to a managed server instead of getting technical support for the problem that is occuring. They had no problem charging me for the services but they didnt fix my problem.

You are a host yourself I assume Sly, is this how you would run a company?

When you PAY for technical support(unmanaged or managed) you should get technical support, yes it is a novel concept. Of course thats not what most hosts give you they just charge you the technical support fee, login to the server look around and then claim they did something to help the problem. Bah useless talking on GFY about customer service.

Probably easiest to just hire someone to optimize your servers, 10x easier than moving everything over...
