Just remember that clients like Trillian, (and probably others like jabber based clients, etc) and most importantly, some ad banner disabled ICQ clients, DO NOT REQUEST PERMISSION before adding to contacts..
So, you could, like quite a few people I have tried to initiate ICQ contact with, be filtering out a potential customer or what have you with the default ICQ spam controls. Just be aware. The most pathetic case I have seen was when a sponsor I know had online tech support guys, and they had their spam settings set this way, so they never got a single message - all because they couldn't be bothered to see ICQ spam. Cheers, Backov

Hey Backov
i guess my filter is off cause i get tons of icq spam the only time it bothers me is when i am typing and the spam comes in and automatically what your typing switches to the new icq spam message box. Now I dont realize this when it happens at first because i have to look at the keyboard while i type and i usually have my sound turned way down so i dont here the message come in. :-( |

Backov,
Well, maybe they should use ICQ if they want to contact someone thru ICQ. As someone who provides support thru ICQ I will not turn off the spam filters. I get too much shit from fuckup wanna-be webmasters spamming me with porn sites and other shit. I was spending as much time blocking and closing those messages and requests as I was providing support, if not more. ICQ support does not mean trillian support or whatever other 3rd party clients are out there. If those other clients support authorizations, then great. If not, well, sorry. Note that ICQ is not the sole support option I have for my customers, but it is very handy. |

And btw - I wasn't talking about you, although you are obviously one of the offenders. ICQ is a protocol, supporting only the one client is foolish. FlyingIguana - Trillian kicks the living shit out of ICQ and every other IM client out there, don't be fooled. Cheers, Backov

As far as being an offender, I take offense at that remark. I realize the ICQ client is only one of many, but so far it seems the only one that fully supports the entire protocol. Blaming someone for supporting the original client only as it is the one that supports the full protocol is like blaming someone for not supporting every single browser on the market. |

I was posting this thread to inform people who care enough about their clients to make sure that they are able to contact them. You don't, so end of discussion for you. I am like Moose, I rarely if ever recieve ICQ spam, and I have my spam filters set very low. Cheers, Backov

Yeah, I don't care about any of my customers. You are sooo right. Maybe I should have asked your advice before even contemplating starting a company. I guess maybe I should think as much of your opinion as you do. Then I would be a successful bidness man.
