Sex.com only worth $14M?

I really thought that domain would be worth alot more, don't get why he sold it for $14M, if that is all he got. What do you guys think?

I was amazed that it sold for that much. I say congratulations to Kremen.

I personally don't buy into a domain having value in and of itself. Sure, I understand the value of a good domain for brand recognition and type in/natural traffic but come on.

Again, congrats to Kremen. Take the money and enjoy it, it's been a long, hard uphill battle for him for quite a few years.

Basic Example:
$2M Down
$12M at 5%

Intrest = $600K

if you are able to pull in $2K a day that equals $730K a year

So roughly $130K return a year

130K/2M = 0.065

ROI 6.5%

And that is only on $2K a day, if I was unable to pull in $2K a day with that domain I would shoot myself.

70k typeins a day plus 30k se traffic a day. These are just estiamtes but gives us a nice 100k a day of clean traffic. 10% CTR to something at an average of .10/click is $1000 per day. I do not think he bought the traffic business as that is being run seperate.

Those who have bought traffic there know I am being generous. I just hope the traffic numbers I have heard are way off the mark and he is getting tons more. The past models seem unlikely to have caused lots of bookmarking but he has huge name recognition and word of mouth going.

One minor detail is, who will lend money at 5% to buy a domain?
Another minor detail is, who will lend 12 Million for a virtual asset, when the buyer is putting up less than 20% of his own money.

I say congratulations to Kremen, but I would have held out for 22 million ;-) with better terms..

take the money and run...

sex.com before Gary was doing 1 million a day from ads. then Gary re-aquired his sex.com and turned it into a pay per click search engine. something that never should have been done.

advertising sells for more then .05 cost per click. it takes alot of traffic to make your money back on a cpc...

good luck to the new ownership ;-)

ALOT of banks would lend me that money in a heartbeat if I put down $2M.

IMO they are getting more traffic and could easily get a better CTR and should make indeed a few $k per day with not much problems.

But not $40k per day as Nysus claimed in another thread lol

anyway, we can just speculate, I don't even know who that company is that acquired this domain

14 millions sounds nice, its just a domain, so it can't be bought for 12 years income like real estate...

and i also wasnt thinking they got a loan for it

$40K a day will probably need some serious work. If you have a good model then $10K a day after a year might be quite possible without too much work. $10K a day give an ROI of 150% in my previous calculation.....

Now as for domains not being bought as real estate, why not?

Not getting a loan would make them really bad investors.

Sex.com ppc traffic has always sucked for me in the past so I think $14 million is just a good price.
The domain has such a HUGE potential to be successful. If I'd own it I would try some kind of video mega site like VideosZ and with enough advertising it will do very well.

Sex.com was most profitable when it was just a banner farm and receiving most of it's traffic from the 270K type-ins/day

10K-50K per banner (buttons were the cheapest to buy) per month and you guys remember how many banners were on the page!

Any money lenders in here?

I can pay up to 30% on your money and you have my domains as collateral.

It's sad it only went for $14 million. Sad knowing that in the hands of the correct person it's going to be worth tons more, but while in the hands of an ...... well it didn't do so good.

Kremen definitely ran that domain into the ground. The smartest move he ever did was selling it for $14M.

Hmmm.. the value of Sex.com will def. go up in value... but I still think Gary did a great sell...

If I owned sex.com I had made it a ringtones site... something like "Sexy ringtones and logos at Sex.com".

It had been a viral marketing machine by it self without work.

Gary wasn't the smartest marketing guy

If you have a solid biz system and a proven track record any bank will lend you that money.

worth a lot more

You guys are too focused on the short term traffic and cash flow. The play here is that this is and will remain the worlds number one adult Internet brand. And if you see the site text the new business model is exposed which Im sure will be rather profitable once complete.

So this site will end up worth an incredible mint, irrespective of the fact that the domain itself was a bargain, if you can even believe the reports at all which I doubt.

Then one day after massive dollars are turned the site will be resold and the owners take the capital gain.

Walla
