NaughtyWhores,
Funny you should mention that cuz last week we were having this discussion with my neighbours and my son. He was saying that from now on, he's asking my mother for permission to do things since it was a free for all then! LMAO

Although I try not to shield him from things, I don't allow him to go gallavanting like I did. We were a group of intrepid kids - got into alot of messes but found the right solutions to get out.

Although nowadays 'we're' more cautious, we're not letting our kids earn & learn their street smarts at a young age. For this reason, I like to be 100% honest with him so even if he doesn't do what we did *thank heavens* - he will know what we did to solve it. Hopefully, knowing is better than not knowing although experience is the best teacher.

I think you're onto something....we had to problem solve.....and scrape our knees. When did parents become so protective of a child's feelings..and esteem....they call it 'self esteem' for a reason.

I think, also, we kept things from our parents because it made us feel all grown up, even though we usually made the wrong decisions....at least, we made decisions...and by making the mistakes, we learned what not to do.

Is this true for today's kids?

Raven, funny you mention the scraping of the knees - in my house, if you scraped your knees and were crying about it, you had to go home and stay there. Guess what? We lived with it, if there was water around we'd wash it up, if not, *the bloods gonna dry fast - don't tell mommy* and we'd continue to play!

Same in my house. We learned very quickly not to complain about scrapes.

I fell out of a tree and broke my nose. Had I gone home, I would be taken to a doctor, which interfered with my good time, so I didn't go home. Damn, that was an ouch!

1955 here...
What ever happened to the motown sound???

I miss the Commodores...excellent funk...thigh high boots and rolled up jeans...

My first album was Leslie Gore's Party Songs..."It's my Party and I'll cry if I want to"

I fell in love for the first time dancing to Smoky Robinson and the Miracles...doing the grind...

*sigh*

Reminds me of a homework assignment my daughter was working on the other night. One of the essay questions she had to answer was, "Why do we have pencils."

After thinking about it, my daughter replied, "Because people keep losing them all the time."

I guess to a 15-yr-old, pencils are becoming more redundant every day.

"Bad news for the construction industry," I said. "How will carpenters mark the length of a two-by-four to cut it?"

"Easy," she says, "They just have the store cut it the length they want."

I gave up.
