It's all about the ROI... I'm sure that in his opinion those $50 were well spent.

they sure we're a good ROI.

But it just proves he knew nothing about making money on the internet, and because of luck and hype, he made a lot of money.

His webpage is ugly, and I don't see how it can be usefull for an advertiser to buy a spot there.

I figure it's in the same category of investments as buying an add spot on somebody's forehead. Great exposure for a short period of time, nothing more.

It is not about "web savy" it is about a unique idea at the right time.

eBay is another example. That idea could not have been "cultivated" it had to just "happen".

Ya, obviously he knew nothing about making money on the internet...

What fucking tool he must be...

(sarcasm)

Ideas always seem stupid and so simple when you aren't the one who thought of them.

Agreed, to a point. He definitely doesn't seem web savvy, and I think that this is why he was successful. Read his blog entries - he plays off as a regular student who is not a brilliant programmer nor web interpreneur, and media loves these kind of "get quickly rich on the intraweb" stories.

Love him or hate him, you gotta give him credit for knowingly or unknowingly playing the media. He did it so well that online newspapers worldwide, from chinese to russian, were writing articles about him and his little page. Even wall street journal caught on, and he went on a short publicity tour to the US.

I don't think any web-savvy person would have imagined this idea working to begin with.

I see people saying the advertising is useless, and you're probably right if you're talking about long term clicks. But I wonder if the SEO experts here could tell us if being linked from his site will do positive things for the site linked to...

the kid hired imal wagner public relations media guru for $7000 a month.
http://www.imalwagner.com

There was no luck involved.
It was a well calculated campaign placing the school kid and his page in the media for the past 4 months.

There are now thousands of copy cat sites using search engines link trades, google adwords and other marketing methods,,, AND NONE OF THEM HAVE SOLD SHIT.

I don't think that getting linked from it will do much good for your. The page has thousands of links - the PR must be greatly dilluted.

You don't see how it can be useful for an advertiser to buy a spot on a webpage that has gotten as much media attention as this site has received? And you have the nerve to put shit on this guy? Current alexa rank is 1219.

Do you really think he paid her $7k a month? You must be clueless. Her PR girl got just as much promotion over the past month as he did. If any, she would have paid him money.
