Im sure this will be branded as spam, but my boss has commissioned me to toss up about 35 .WMV video clips of our content, for our cash program users to use for marketing. Each clip is 4.5 MBs, and 180 second long.

I'm not finished with these yet, and I'm also not sure if this would really be something people could easily use.

If someone would leave feedback I would appreciate it. Are these clips just way too big for webmasters to host? My boss made the clips in his off time, and thinks they would be perfect. I think they might be too big for most people to use.

make the master clips available in mpeg format, then each webmaster can cut and edit to their preference.

don't chop the clips up for "webmaster convenience" (

).
big mistake, everyone likes to chop them up differently and into different lengths, and sizes.

i make both long and short galleries, the first has many 500kb clips, then long galleries with 2 * 1.5 to 2mb clips.

master file is useful.

make them mpeg.... 4.5mb is too big, good for people on cable and such but you will lose interest of dialup pretty quickly.. 180 seconds is like giving away your members area

Master file .mpg huh? That's an interesting idea, but it's hard to just toss up a huge video for anyone to download.

This is something I might be able to do via e-mail for some users though, but I couldn't just toss up a full movie just like that.

You favor .mpg because it's easy to cut up the files yourself?

We use a lot of .WMV's for our site, because we stream the full movies with Windows Media Player. That's why we chose the .wmv format for these video clips.

trust me, wmvs are bad. i dislike them, other people are going to dislike them. surfers want good quality mpegs. better movies = more signs. i don't even know if wmvs play on macs.

putting a 50mb file for download is not a problem if its in the webmaster area. you pay maybe 35 to 50 cents per gig or less?
i really don't see the problem especially when these guys will be making you a shitload of cash anyway. its not like you're posting it on worldsex or something. even if it costs you $500... which it won't 'cause theres i doubt you have 10k webmasters that will all download the movie... who cares? who cares if it costs $1k?

you'll make it back, and more, anyway. if not in signs on your own site, then it'll be on your exit/enter consoles.

Oh! I'm not worried about the download on our side for these clips too much, just worried if people can afford to host them.

My boss refuses to toss up a full move uncut though, just asked.

Our WMVs are really high quality, which is why we use that format.

At the same resolution/quality/length I was told an mpg version would be a bigger file size. Haven't had our encoding guy test this out for me yet though.

So does everyone think these file sizes are ok, as long as they are .mpg?

(50 mb file? We stream our entire movies. The streams are normally about an hour per video, and the wmv's run about 400 MBs each.)

i host them on my server and i'm very interested about your marketing tool. As webmaster I would prefer to be mpeg since editing them is easier, but if it's wmv it's not that big problem. Please keep us inform

Told my boss, he will remake the wmv's to be 30 seconds long. We are going to keep the format as .wmv though, the size is smaller, and the video is clearer then mpg format from the comparison I just saw between two just now.

Ok, here is what we are going to do. We are going to make 30 second clips, and use the formats of .avi, and .wmv.

I figure this way they will be the "right" length from what Ive read, and offering two video formats for the webmaster to use/choose from should work out good too.

Does this sound about right guys?

WMVs are higher quality and smaller in size then MPEG4 and Quicktime. They play on both MAC and Windows. SO they are an excellent choice. However the problem with them is when you download them they don't show the referrer, so they would be a poor choice for any place they need to be referrer protected.

I hate vids w/ the URL on them -- it's even worse than pics -- the guy is in Windows Media Player -- he see's the URL on the vid -- his first instinct is to do a type-in -- NO $$$ for me.... This is why most people push pics -- even though a lot of paysites offer promo vids... If someone wants to advertise a promo movie -- it should be a ad paid spot -- that way there's no worries about lost referrals... if you want exposure for your movie w/ a watermark -- you should have to pay up front -- otherwise don't expect good results w/ resellers... W/ the success of oxcash -- really how many sites do you see pushing all those promo movies? Practically NOBODY...

A watermark I think is ok if it just has the site's title, but no explicit URL...

Man O Man, glad to see my company isnt the only one having a hard time in deciding what to do with their movie clips, etc.

Gotta make it this long for this guy, this short for that bitch, in the format for that idiot, and dont forget to wrap it in a pretty package and shove it up the surfers ass.

Sorry had to vent, been screwing with movies none stop lately to try and get them perfect, went with about every Video Editing software on the planet before I decided that one of the cheapest with the better results was Pinnacle Studio 7, it's fast, makes the clips smaller, and in good quality. Now I just have to re rip every video I shot for my members area over the last year.
