Satellite vs Cable, which one do you have?

I've never had satellite. Should I turn off the cable and get satellite?

I have never had it either. I heard there are a lot more HD channels on satellite... All of my TVs are HD... I have thought about looking into it but seems like a pain in the ass seeing as I have my internet through them too and all of the charges on one bill sure is convenient.

We have satellite (DirecTV) because we don't have cable available in the area. We get 900 channels give or take... like 600 are sports/PPV/music channels. The rest are just what you can get on cable. If you are into all those excess channels, its cool I guess but it goes out when the weather is bad (rain, snow) and it costs more money than cable. I miss cable

Oh and it takes forever to surf the guide to find something to watch it definitely needs some kind of search function!

satellite all the way

we have 250 channels, two recievers, XM Radio, 12 premium movie channels and tivo with dual tuner built into the box...all for $62 a month

ANYONE try and beat that shit, you just can't...the tivo+XM subscription alone is equal to a month of cable service, but the XM radio is built into directv and the tivo is only $5 extra a month

Like Harmon, I also have internet going thru my cable so it would take some work to hook it up. If satellite goes out during bad weather, forget it. That's when you want to sit in and watch something.

I just got cable after 2 years of not watching tv. I was wondering if their is more on air that's worthwhile. It seems like many stations show the same shows (across stations and reruns on the same station). I'm totally out of touch with pop culture. I might just get cable turned off again lol.

My brother has Cogeco cable and it is a joke. Some of the channels are so fuzzy it looks like they are being pulled in on rabbit ears. The HD channels look nice though, but that is about it. I found his regular cable channels almost unwatchable on his 55 inch RPTV.

I have Bell Expressvu myself and the picture quality is amazing compared to the cable available around here.

those who are complaining of bad weather and satellite, whatever...i have had directv for years now, and I count on one hand the # of times we have lost service

as long as the installation is done right and the dish is mounted firmly and properly, there will be minimal outages.

as for interenet, I use cable for my internet, NOTHING beats cable....for the home at least....i am getting 1.2mb/sec downloads now, that is 1200kb/sec!!!! it rocks

Well I've had both and I've been an ecstatic DirecticTv Customer for the the last 5 years.

Satellite Pros
- Superb, consistent, digital quality on all channels
- More Choices
- Excellent Customer Service
- Infrequent Price Hikes
- Better HD options

Satellite Minus
- Must buy equipment usually
- Responsibile for fixing equipment
- Severe Weather causes brief interruptions
- Need clear shot at southern sky for dish

Cable Pros
- Slightly Cheaper
- They supply equipment
- They fix equipment
- Decent Channel Selection
- Internet Connection Option

Cable Minus
- Frequent Price hikes vary by local regs
- Worlds worst customer service
- Inconsistent signal quality of various channels
- Considerably more service interruptions
- Not all channels are "digital" quality

like i said....DUAL TUNER tivo, xm radio, 200+ channels, all for $60 or so a month

for those that don't know what a dual tuner tivo is, you have basically two tv's in one that allow to record on both of them at the same time....so, if two shows are on that you want to see, you can record both with the dual tuner directivo

IF your talking internet:

FUCK SATALITE! Direct-Way (From Direct-TV) Lies their fucking asses off, they tell you you'll get speeds up to 300kb down and uploads as high as 250kb, I have had it for 2 years now and i'm lucky to download at 100kb, and my upload is between 4kb-10kb

The cost is between $50 - $150.00 per month depending on which plan you get and if you pay anything up front.

If it's raining, your offline, if it's snowing your offline, if it's windy your offline, if YOUR weather is great but the NOC location has bad weather your offline.

Tech support is all handled overseas and you get people who sound like Apu from the simpsons, and they tell you "My name is alamahala-ubar but you can call me Bill" and no matter WHAT the prob is they just tell you it's your weather causing the problems.

Only reason I have it is nothing else availble here but Dialup, god bless living on aa lake in the middle of the woods lol

If your Talking TV:

Hell Yeah Fuck Cable!

Well, for us, it was awful. We didn't have any choices, so satellite was IT for our connection to the internet and television. At the time, it was expensive and their customer support was a nightmare.

Cable isn't much better; but, it's better than what we had in Georgia....four years ago.

I don't have a choice of cable companies, since in Vancouver they're territorial, but I have no complaints. I wish I had the Food network in my package, but oh well. I hardly watch tv anyway. I can't imagine watching enough to justify getting satellite.

My cable (Comcast) offers all that sort of stuff. Plus they have on-demand, which satellite doesn't.

If satellite doesn't support on-demand soon, they are going to take a huge hit. It's not a must have right now, but within 3-5 years it'll be considered the greatest TV advancement since cable.

As a former dealer of directv and dishnetwork with over 5000 installs from my retail locations, Each person has to way the options depending on whats most important to you. It comes down to cost vs quality.

For internet access do not waiste your time with satellite. Cable is the way to go.
Satellite does deliver digital feeds and is the best for picture quality. I used to ask people with cable...whats at the other end of the cable? a satellite dish!
the only difference is you pay for long cable runs to your home.
most likely that dish is an analog signal and it gets converted to digital and sent to your home. they then have to maintain this network.

With satellite - you get the signal straight from the dish to your sat reciever to your tv. the main thing to think about is how many tv's (4.99 month) per rec per tv.
with satellite, you have to think about your wiring. installers are subcontractors and usually pay for there own materials which means they do the bare mininum installation.

if however, you get a good install, (outdoor fittings, drip loops, grounding) and a good signal (good signal meter alone costs $100) , it will work very well and might go out during a heavy heavy rainfall. (rain fade)
i could talk for hours about your Satellite or Cable decision. Satellite is superior for quality of picture and cable is better for internet. If price is not an issue get both and see which you like better.

If you do decide to get satellite I would go with Directv over Dishnetwork.

Brandenburg Telecom, a small mom and pop operation here has strung fiber optic lines all over the country ( a really big deal anywhere I think , but especially hare in the middle of nowhere lol). Problem is, the services and prices they offer suck ass. But the rednecks are going nuts over it. 99% of the county has never had high speed internet, and most have had only the option of satelite and no cable tv. I think these guys are gonna make a fucking killing for a while, cause theres no competition.

Digital Cable here where we are in PA from Comcast.

The internet services are fantastic as long as you NEVER call tech support for help since they are totally clueless 99% of the time.

The one thing that I'd LOVE more than anything is the ability to pick and choose what premium channels I can subscribe to on an individual basis and pay for each accordingly without having to get channels I dont want or never watch.

Also, a kick ass control panel to set up my cable services, open tickets if needed and perform moves, adds, changes myself without having to deal with asshats trying to upsell me when I call in would be the bomb.

A couple weeks ago I decided I wanted Spike TV, so I called my provider and ordered it for a year for $9.99

I have a 10' satellite dish with 4DTV and MPEG receivers hooked to it. I get at least 2000 channels, much of it unscrambled & free... although there's a ton of them I'd never watch.

Digital cable over 300 channels plus the HD channels, all of the premium channels (including HBO, Cinemax and Starz on demand) plus DVR and during baseball season I have the MLB package. I also have my internet conenction through them. I used to bitch about Cox cable a lot, but they've been amazing for that past while and the customer service has improved tenfold.
