Howard Stern; $500 Million Bucks.. DISCUSS!

He's had more fines than any other broadcaster -- but now he'll be free of government controls. He's had up to 22 million listeners a day, but starting next month they'll have to pay to hear his new satellite radio show. Howard Stern is walking away from his show on free radio this week, taking the risk for a 5-year, $500 million contract with Sirius Satellite Radio. Since he announced his move last year, subscriptions have more than doubled. But, that's still only a small fraction of his audience now. Is he making a good move?

At 500 million how could it be a bad move? Plus I am sure anyone deadset against paying will be able to find it on the web somewhere.

He's got to use the 500 mill to pay his staff and stuff is the way I saw it.

Big risk, but lots of great things were built on taking a big risk.

I'll say I don't own SIRI anymore tho

He's losing some of his staff, Robin is getting her own TV show I think, only gary and few others are going with him I believe...

But yea, that's still PLENTY to pass around over 5 years... Come on.

the 500 mil is for everything he does. He will be using that money to program the two channels they are giving him. So he will have his show on there but he also hired bubba the love sponge to do a show and has a howard news show and he says around 30 other shows in the works all of which come out of that money. He will still be making a truck load, but that entire amount won't be in his pocket.

nah, Robin's show has been in development forever. Even if it hits the air waves, it won't succeed. She'll always be with the show even though she's the one person I wish would leave.

Everyone else will be on Sirius too. The wack pack is already there.
I'm listening to Beetlejuice telling about how he punched Tom in the fuckin' face right now. It's hilarious. He's swearing his ass off.

It'll pay off for them. They've gotten a huge number of subscribers from Stern and will continue to as long as he makes the news, and they have a recurring billing model, which as we all know is as profitable in the long term as you can get

yeah it is a risk for them but if you brings in a million new subscribers at $12 a month that covers the cost and then some. I wouldn't be surprised to see him add that many in the first few months he is with them.

I don't think it's a risk. Satellite radios will be standard in most cars in 5 years I say.

I am sure that he's going to make that back plus so much more - there is absolutely no risk in this for Sirius - its for all of the channels that they are doing together.

Howard made himself a sweet deal.

Its pretty damn good for Sirius as well. Howards show will have some advertising on it. Aside from the subscriber revenue he is going to bring with him you can add that advertising revenue as well.

Not to mention all the free advertising hes giving them now.

Fun times for Sat. Radio

if you a true stern fan you will be paying to listen to him don't deny it...

it's so worth it too think about it now his show is 100% uncensored think about all the places he can take his show now that he is unrestricted...

this is going to open so many new doors for the show

what he said.. there is no risk in taking a $500 million dollar contract. the correct question is... is it worth it for Sirius?

Saying "$500 Million Bucks" is redundant. The dollar sign is already there, so you don't need to say "bucks."

Sad part is in Canada if you subscribe to Sirius you still don't even get to listen to Stern. Fucking CRTC. He pissed off the French years ago and now the rest of us have to pay for it.

Some of you need to read the terms of the deal. There is no fucking way Stern will get anywhere close to $500M. He will never be able to reach the incentive terms of the contract.

I'm sure that as his first Sirius show date gets closer and closer, Sirius is REALLY gonna explode and after his first shows start with him doing whatever he wants and if it's good, word of mouth is gonna REALLY get people out buying Sirius.

I myself recently bought a new vehicle and I jumped on Sirius right away for both NFL football and Howard. I live in an area where Howard was never on the radio, but always enjoyed listening to him when I went into a bigger city. It's gonna be nice to be able to listen to him every day.

I'm sure that in the coming years, satellite radio is gonna take out traditional radio. You figure all uncensored radio nation-wide radio with no commercials, how can it fail ? I just don't think that people are aware of just how good it is.

Car radios aren't the future for sat radio. Portable and home audio are

That's the market you'll see them building and pushing in the coming years. Car audio was just an easy entry for them.

Not a bad move in that he'll have complete freedom. He's proved he's the man on free radio already and he'll make way more money doing this so who cares...makes money doing what he loves

But he picked the wrong satellite radio network

im sure theres a clause in there that if stern isnt bringing enough money in that they can lower the payment to him or fire him.
Theres no way a company would be stupid enough to sink their entire business and all their investors over hiring 1 celeb.

And Stern wouldnt want the embarassment of a station losing money because of him either.

Howard is over rated.
There's tons of people in this industry who can do it 10x better than he can.

I honestly dont like the guy, but I think he's brilliant in a stupid kind of way.

FROM THE WSJ: "Sirius's major strategy is to go after the so-called aftermarket -- people who buy radios in places like Best Buy Co. and Circuit City Stores Inc. The company hopes to add enough new customers in the aftermarket to catch up to XM's quarterly sales. Yet the vast majority of subscribers get their satellite service from radios installed in newly purchased cars, where XM dominates. Last quarter, XM signed up 617,000 subscribers, compared with 360,000 for Sirius."

Pay $500 million for stern and hope he brings in all these new subscribers, or just cut deals with the automakers themselves to install your radio in the car so when the customer buys, it already comes equipped?
