bootup with the xp boot cd, remove the existing partition and create a new one with the unallocated space, then format using the xp cd

thanks, I'll give that a try

does it make a difference if the new partition is FAT or whatever the other one was called? which one is better?

this PC started 'freezing' like 2 days ago and I tried everything possible (virus scan, uninstalled almost every prgogram, system restore etc), anyway does the partition make any difference in the PC performance

ntfs is your best bet if your reinstalling xp. i dont think fat is even an option if you're using the xp cd to create and format a partition.

check your cpu/system temp and make sure your fans arent screwing up. freezing isnt always a virus so unless you have everything backed up and ready to reload id consider other things before going threw all that mess. also run a chkdsk and defrag the drive, look at the task manager and see whats loaded that shouldnt be, etc etc.

I defragmeneted the HD, ran chkdisk, there're no programs/processes runnig in the background that shouldn't be there, but the CPU fan is something that I didn't think about and I wouldn't be surprised if it is fucked up

If you have a floppy, use a Win boot disk
