port scan attack

Since I got broadband a month ago I have been getting a bunch of these most every day.

My firewall seems to be stopping them but is there anything else I need to do?

Your firewall is stopping them.... what else would you like to do?

what kind of firewall are you using? And what ports do you have open? I would touch on a guess here that the majority of them are probably from your ISP.... not to worry really.... but if it's buggin' you, just make sure you only have the ports open that you need open. Lock everything else out.

Check out www.grc.com to see how good your firewall actually is. Use the 'Shields Up!' program, and that 'Port Scan' program. They are run via the web - you needn't download anything.

Broadband IPs are well know, and sequential - the hackers know that everyone between IP #xxx and IP #yyy are broadband (i.e. that they are ALWAYS online), which makes them the easier targets, therefore, they attack all of them. It is not a direct attack on your computer - you are being attacked with everyone else using your service. Why, isn't that nice!

anyway, www.grc.com should let you know how you stand. If you care to, read those pages in FULL, and you can change your networking windows piece of crap into full stealth mode, and hackers won't even know you exist.

What would I like to do?

I would like to send an electric charge back down the line and kill the fuckers.

I will, however, settle for just not letting them into my computer.

They use programs that scan 1000's of computers at once to find an open door.
They mostly check to see if you have any trojan installed.
If you have a firewall and a virus scanner you don't have to worry much.
zonealarm is a good firewall and it is free.

I'm not losing any sleep over it but I wanted to see if there was anything else I should do or just let the firewall take care of it.

Juge,

Thanks for the link to www.grc.com
