Those who like FC4 but cant seem to get it to install

Well as many of you may know Fedora Core 4 has some issues installing on some servers. It likes to install on some servers and not others, it seems that FC4 was going to be a failed project especlly for alot of people who wanted its powerful OS on there server. The problem lied within a faulty install script that has yet to be fixed that on some motherboards it cant not determain the IDE/Harddrive drivers and or it does find it but does not read them properly causing a failed install and in most cases a kernel panic. Well after doing some research on google i found nothing would work there was no info, this was about 2-3 months ago. I then said one day fuck it and went back to fedora core 3. Well on one server that I actually got fedora core 4 to install on, i looked into the kernel versions and so forth, and then said well hell let me try something. I ran yum but instead of letting it detect its normal list i copied the yum i hadi nstalled form FC4 to my FC3 and what I did was a yum update kernel and by doing that I was able to get the fedora core 4 kernel installed, upon reset i had no issues, then ran a simple yum update and boom i had officaly fedora core 4 and all its benfits and now so do our customers. So those of you who got frustered and gave up on fedora core 4, theres a simple solution.

Why continue to use Fedora? It's better meant as a desktop os, than a server. And pointless to continue with the Redhat/Fedora free os project, when there is a free OS based on the redhat enterprise sources ..

easy because most of our customers prefer to use Fedora Core, if I had my choice it would be Debian or Slackware, but it is not my choice, and for many of those people out there who admin there own systems and just ask us to do the installs prefer fedora over any other os

Definately no fighting .

I used to be a strong believer in Fedora as a server OS, however it has proven to be not the greatest. I'd say the same for Slackware, and I believe Debian is better for servers, though my experience with it is limited. Personally I don't have much trust in linux anymore, but when I have to use it, I will always choose CentOS.

I've made the turn to FreeBSD as my preference, it is much more stable, secure and reliable in my opinion.

So you are saying to take a Fedora Core 3 server, and just use Yum to load the Fedora Core 4 Kernel on it?

This isn't upgrading the server to Fedora Core 4 .. this is loading a new kernel yes, but not everything else.

no no no once you have the fedora core 4 kernel installed and you run a simple yum update it will call all the fedora core depens.... installing all the things that come with fedora core 4

Gotcha .. so in essence, you are saying you discovered the upgrade technique that has been documented for quite some time, though I am guessing you have missed a few steps as you did not mention them .. Here is the documentation guide. http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Upg..._with_yum.html

PS, you can make the check for consulting fee's out to Phatservers .

I know you weren't trying to take credit for someone's work, I was really relaying that URL over to you, so you could make sure you got your server upgraded properly, that all!

I really never had any issues installing Fedora Core 4 on any of our servers except for that one installation where Fedora didn't detect the videocard drivers correctly, but a simple text install worked out just great.

Fedora Core 5 is around the corner and should be released around January 2006 if I'm correct, let's see if that solves the install issues you're having

I agree. Eastman has more experience. Perhaps I should send his education bill to you? LOL

Regardless, Joel was simply offering his insight and you pissed on him. Shame on you.

:-)

Peace out MoFo.

Excuse the hell out of me .. are you implying that you taught me everything I know? Just as you told all of your customers you did when I left your company?

I came in to your company knowing less than I knew when I left, but I hardly learned shit from you. You were never around to help out, I had to learn everything on my own, that I didn't already know. You may have shown me some things, however I recall me teaching you plenty too.

If you forgot, I came in knowing a hell of a lot, having several years previous experience in the same position at two other companies .. I just had 4 years with you, which gave me plenty of time to learn more.

You know, my replies were never meant to give Joel shit, and I even talked to him on AIM after he messaged me, I was giving an honest opinion in his thread. You sir, have pissed me off with that comment. And you know damn well that you don't want me talking.

I wasnt talking to you Mr. E.
Regardless, dont be so defensive, it was a joke because you worked here for a long time
and learned alot here while working here. I never said I taught you, however, yes, we taught eachother quite a bit, you are right. I was being synical in response to mr. Moose. :-)

Cheers and I hope you and your new baby are well.
