Visa or MasterCard, is there really a difference?

I have yet to go to a place that only accepted one of these two card so I wonder what's the point of carry these two cards when only one would do! And what one offer that the other doesn't?

You are correct most places all over the world take both. But you may find some Mastercards will give you a better interest rate than Visa. And its always good to have back up just in case ?

True.
The interest rate on my MasterCard is about 8% vs 15% for Visa.

They enforce a monopoly. You can't get one without the other.

Here in Japan (in my experience in Okinawa) most stores accept 1 of the cards (and half the time they don't accept either, it's still a cash based society), not both. And more ATMs will accept Mastercard

Well you said "I have yet to go to a place that only accepted one of these two card "

Because the same Parent Company owns them, i forget the stats but i think 75% of people have a visa and 25% have mastercard, and the more popular banks offer Visa.

Yep, they both are credit cards.

Pepsi and Coke are also both colas.

Ford and General Motors are both in the car business.

Creative Labs and Apple offer MP3 players.

But what's the real difference?

The difference is marketing. Do you click this banner to get your credit card or reply to which of the 1000 things you get in the mail. What matters more is the bank offering the card.

Actually I was pressured by my banks to get them. They kept harrassing me with phone calls, letters and every time I went to the bank to do business. After 10 years of harrassment, I broke it

Mastercard companies mostly have hidden rules when it comes to cash advances or anything relating to receiving cash on the receiving end. ie wu, paypal, casino, epassporte, etc. Sometimes fees occur unlike Visa but I am sure it happens. So if you are looking for a more versatile company I would go with Visa rather then Mastercard.

They are not owned by the same company, they are organizations. They work together though? alot? deeply? with passion.

They only provide the network... the banks own the funds and credit claims.

I have never had Mastercard, Visa approved me first, and after that I never applied for a MC again.
