But the heyday of simulated rape videos ? and other less violent pornography - will soon end if the administration of President George W. Bush has its way.

Just last month, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the conviction and rejected First Amendment protection arguments in a ruling that federal prosecutors in Dallas say has now cleared the way for more such prosecutions.

The 2003 Ragsdale trial represented the Republican administration?s opening salvo in a war on adult pornography that has not been seen in more than 25 years, when President Ronald Reagan?s Attorney General was Edwin Meese III, legal experts say and prosecution statistics show. The importance of the Ragsdale case to Washington?s newest enforcement ?war? was underscored by the direct involvement of prosecutors from a special justice department Obscenity Task Force in the nation?s capital.
