Hey AdWords people...what does it take to get the results on the top of the page?

I have a client that would love to get his result right at the top of the page....is it just a matter of bidding the highest for that term?

any tips?

It's a combination of bid price + click through ratio. To my knowledge, it's not possible to get until your ad has a proven high CTR - generally a few weeks at a minimum.

You might find that getting top spot does not bring you the sales that you hoped for .

There are quite a few merchants in mainstream who say that they get the best sales from being number 3 or 4 ... but that may also depend on what they're selling.

If nothing else the top spot is good for branding I guess.

i think i know what u mean, in order to get those big ads u have to spend a certain amount of $ per month. The #1 doesnt necesarilly get it. Last i checked it was $5000 a month minimum u are given a special status on your account which will give your #1 spots the big listing on top

The reply about CTR and bid amount is correct - you have to have a minimum CTR (usually two weeks worth to prove an average) and then a bid jump way above the #1 spot (usually takes around $2 above the #1 spot to get the ad moved over to the top of the natural results)

Also there are some keywords where Google doesnt allow the ads to move over to that spot - so make sure you are going for a spot where youve seen someone over there before

There is no minimum amount spent over time to get there - I used to do it with a budget of under $500 a day so it should be pretty easy once you have the CTR

interesting, thanks for that

this is all for a mainstream client, I am advising him against it, but he is too impatient to wait for the natural result to get up there

What he said.
You can't get it by bidding high, etc. Google's ad machine thingee calculates everything to see if you are, essentially, worthy of the top spot.

I have a few in the blue and once you get there, it's pretty solid you'll remain there.
