What do you mean?

It is the device driver for the video card that allows the desktop to span both monitors.

Application software does not do anything special.

I think you are missing something like a separate taskbar per monitor

Newer nvidia drivers have full monitor support. Task bar, windows placement etc. No need for extra software.

Each task bar will open a set of programs you decided on the monitor you picked. Makes thing easier to manage.

Used alot in editing systems called a dual monitor set up. The last time I set one up was
using video card...it basically has dual outputs to the monitors but can make them act as one. I imagine thats still how it is done and not just a software only
solution.

This is what I use. Just one wide desktop spanning two monitors.

Makes work in Photoshop much easier when the bridge and tool windows are on the right monitor, and the left monitor is just for the photograph that I am working on.

One task bar on the left monitor is plenty for me. But having PS, email, windows explorer and a browser going at the same time is about as multi as I task.

I am in the same problem here as well

Here is what I have
- Onboard S3 Graphics KM400/KN400
- ATI Radeon 7000
- NVidia GeForce P118

I am trying to have a multi-monitor system (1 15" primary monitor and 1 15" extended display).

I have spent 5 hours yesterday (11pm-4am

) and this afternoon (2pm-530pm) to get both monitors working, first using the ATI Radeon and later the Nvidia

I have gooogled my way on how to do it but the problem still remains. There are so many tips on how to do it out there and I have tried everything I could and I have spent over 8 hours for this and am still trying to figure this out.

Please help. Thanks

It should prompt you at setup. You must have both monitors connected. Usually newer vid cards will have one dvi connector, and on vga connector. If your monitors are vga only you will need a dvi to vga adapter.

I tought it was pretty much "plug and play"!
All I did is replace my old video card with an ATI Radeon 9250 card, pluged in both my monitors (for one I had to use DVI-to-VGA adapter that came with the card) and open my computer. It took me less than 10 minutes in all.

I use ultramon. Redfalcon I believe the issue you're having is that you're plugging the monitors into different graphic cards. To have a functional dual setup you need to have 1 gfx card that can function with in a dual monitor mode.

Yup. And I found it a pain in the ass of always having to drag windows into the second monitor and having just one taskbar for both monitors. Plus as I add more monitors, having a seperate taskbar per monitor will become more and more important.

I use a dual monitor set up with a NVidia, works great. I have them act as one and I dont have to open a different program in a different windo I just drop and drag whatever I want wher I want it. The main reason I have this is because I prefer it with video editing and photoshop. Tools on one sceen, piece that I am working on on the other. It's an addicting set up tho, it's also nice to check your sales stats on one and surf on the other..

All I did was install drivers for both vid cards, right click the desktop and go to properties, and winXP recognizes the 2 vid cards and lets you configure.

Why do you need 2 video cards for just 2 monitors?
You should be able to put at least 2 monitors and a tv output per videocard.

i don't believe the vid card that came with the computer has 2 outputs. i'll have to check.

Actually windows standard can recognize up to 10 video cards, if you have a video card that is a little bit older and has only one output you can put another one in and windos (XP) will recognize it. I had it like that for a long time untill I bought the new Nvidia card.

Same here. I replace the videocard that came with the computer with a new one that cost less than $65 US. For me, it was simplest and fastest solution.

Right on Alex, and it works great. I have a few more features with the new card but it works easy with 2 cheap cards as well.

I'm not saying you can't have 2 monitors plugged into 2 different cards. I've got 3 monitors going into 2 cards, but most cards have to be compatible in some way. The cards listed are old and I have my doubts that they'd work together.

It's an editing keyboard. It has all the color coding on the keys and it has athe jog/shuttle wheel. Ever since I edit with this my edit time got cut in half. http://www.bella-usa.com/
