well, for an emergency light for situations where you may be without electricity for any extended period the new LED capacitor flashlights are really good. shake it for about 30 seconds and it gives 5 minutes of bright light. electricity is stored in a capacitor and shaking it pushes a magnet back and forth to charge the capacitor.---never wears out, and never needs battery. and the bigger one is approx as bright as a 3-D cell flashlight.
check ebay "emergency flashlight"---comes in 2 sizes. i have a bunch of them and they work really good. |

Go with a 3D maglite. World's best.

I have oen of those 1 million candle power spot lights I picked upa t walmart for $15. uses a 25 watt halogen and has a 6 volt lead acid sealed battery inside. Charges in about 8 hours, runs for about an hour. The 2 million candlewatt ones last longer for $25.

Some great info so far guys, thanks!
Yes, I am looking for a rechargable one, my most important criteria though is LIGHT POWER. I want something that will light up the sky. Hehe Maglight is cool, but how powerfull is it compared to those 1 million candle flashlights?

If you find one, let me know, but I settled for THIS PUPPY and am very happy ... battery life is decent, and I can shine it ¼ mile on flat geography easily! it is indestructable, you can focus the beam, and is 100% waterproof too! ![]() |

I do a LOT of photography in old abandoned industrial buildings in our local area - mostly at night, with no hydro in the buildings. These are places you DO NOT want to be caught in with a dead flashlight. So I rely heavily on flashlights, I've got quite a collection of various types. Overall, I trust the maglite the most...its never failed me. My rechargeable 1mcp is powerful, of course...but I only get about 20-25 mins. of sustained use with it before it starts to dim. I seldom take it along unless I know I specifically need it to light up a massive area for photos. It all comes down to what exactly you need the flashlight for, and its practicality. I also like the mag in case I run in to a homeless psycho in the old buildings. Its a reassuring weapon in the event I can't talk my way out of a situation. For a good idea of some of the flashlight uses for photography, check out abandoned building galleries here. The lightpainted shots were mostly all done with the mag. |
