Adam Corolla leaving Loveline

Its funny, I was out for lunch today with my father and (not that he cared) but I brought up Adam Corolla when we were talking about modern talk radio hosts. I made the comment that with Adam taking over for Howard Stern on the west coast in addition to all his current other commitment (Late Night, AC Project, Crank Yankers, etc.) there was just no he would be able to stay on loveline (I have been a fan and listed pretty much since day 1 of Adam joining on with Drew).

Low and behold, Adam anounced tonight that he will be leaving loveline after Thursday night's show.

I can remember listening to him on the radio all the way back to highschool. Him and Drew were very much yin and yang and were a great combo.

Its the end of an era and I'll deffinitely miss it. I found myself glued to the radio tonight as I worked to hear every last "Corollaism" as he completes his farewell tour.

The show has been on air for about 22 years. The first 8 were just Drew dating back to when he was in Med School. They went through a few hosts including Ricky Rackman before finding Adam...which is when the show really took off. Eventually it got its own spot on MTV which opened up an even wider audience.

For those that dont know, Adam broke into the biz on Jimmy Kimmel's old radio show. In time Jimmy got his shot at the big time. Now Adam is recieving his. And good news folks....Jimmy is the head creative director for Adam's new show

For those enough old enough in the LA area to really remember.. The orginal loveline was drew (in med school) and the poorman... poorman got fired from kroq radio (orginal home of loveline prior to syndication) for a prank on the morning dj (bean of kevin and bean)...

Man Show, Crank Yankers, and Adam Corolla Project are all huge successes. I liked him best on loveline...but this guy is too fucking funny to not break through. His problem is that he's better at sideline commentary than when ALL the attention is just on him. Thats why he's great on loveline, man show, adam corolla project...but Too Late with Adam Corolla i bet will get canned

For those REALLY old enough to remember....the Original Original was not even as big of a production as that.

It was a once a week Sunday night show that was meant to be more of a PSA than anything while drew was in med school

loveline is great - adam is not great funny on his own but not bad - just good at feeding off the calls and such - maybe he will ascend to something great on his own - give it a shot dude - life is short - congrats on your success

One thing I would say is...people who just base adam carolla off of TV shows dowt have a clue about how hilarious he is...

I really think he not so much meant for TV. The man show was good more cuz of the writing behind the scenes between him and jimmy than Adam on stage. But non-scripted humor....Funniest I have ever heard, nobody comes close

Adam Corolla was the main reason I listened to loveline. He made laugh every night. Good thing he will still be on the radio.

from long, hard experience in the industry....

some people are terrific sidekicks or character guys, but are missing at least one of the ingredients to be a lead host/anchor (or what ever you want to call them). When they're elevated to the big chair, they fail miserably. Corolla seems to be one of those; he's ok with scripted material or when throwing in sardonic comments or observations, but I've never seen/heard the long-form compelling continuity and story-telling ability that's required for a show like Stern's (and Howard is one of the masters at it).
On Loveline, he's great playing off of Drew. Doing the sidekick thing to Kimmel on the Man Show, he was used to best advantage. As the lead on his new Comedy Central show, it's hit-and-miss, but remember most of his material is scripted. As the lead on the new radio show replacing Stern on the West Coast, I forsee problems...

I really think a true loveline listener would say quite different.

I think you ARE correct that Adam is best when he has people around that are "below" him....So on his new show he'll have guests, perhaps sidekicks.

By the end of his stay at loveline...drew was his sidekick, not the other way around...

anyways, the part that made me double take on your post is when you talk about being a storyteller because the Ace Man is the best story teller I have ever heard. Stern is overrated. I love his show but I can think of 5 other local shows in seattle i'd rather listen to.

Holy shit, thats news to me, I started listening to that show 7 yrs ago. Dr Drew and Adam do make a great team or else I wouldn't have listened for that long. Plenty of great advice and terrific laughs. Any news on who will replace him?

maybe i didn't explain it correctly (from my standpoint) -
its true, i don't listen to loveline regularly anymore (haven't in a long time), but for the most part, it's not a "continuity" show, it's a "reactive" show - Adam and Drew react to each other, and most importantly react to the callers and the callers' general topics. Adam is very good in those situations.
maybe he has a storytelling skill that i haven't heard, but to my ear, when he's in a "longform" mode where he has to be in the driver's seat and is the focus of 15-20 minutes worth of content at a time, his delivery (to my ear) is slow, halting and low-energy - he reminds me at times of Norm McDonald - it's very hard (again, to my ear) to be "drawn in" for long periods of time to what he's spinning. i personally think that Howard's talent, while still enormous, hasn't been shown to best advantage over the last 15 years after his show became primarily sexually-oriented (even though it was certainly the right direction from a financial standpoint), but in the 1980s, when he was doing shows on everything from sex to politics to everyday life, he was brilliant on a daily basis - i can still remember a bit he did, that ended up lasting at least an hour, about "what it was like when he was in Nam" - it was one of the most compelling, funny, captivating hours of radio i've ever heard.

I agree with you for sure that being on center stage will be a challenge for him. For the right people (such as myself)...he comes up with these stories, analogies etc...that are EXACTLY what we've been thinking for years but have never been able to put into words.

The challenge will be, he has had these bonehead 15-24 year old kids to play off of when making the analogies and such....

For intance:

17 year old girl calls in and has 3 kids trying to have a 4th and wants to ask why she is having trouble getting pregnant...

And adam would make the remark about how he needs 14 permits and to blow the mayor to put a garage onto his house...yet this chick can pop out 4 kids before her 17th birthday and nobody asks a question.

His "Rants" that he turns into story telling are really what make him the comedic genious that he is. Now , the question is how to harness that in this new format

And that's the difference...making the funny remark is the sign of a good sidekick. Doing 20 minutes on trying to put a garage onto his house is the sign of a good host. Not saying he can't do it....just saying that from my experience (and I've gone through the "trying to make a sidekick into a host" battle several times, and have the mental scars to prove it lol) it's a very difficult transition that not many people can manage. I haven't heard it in him...but I hope he's one of the few who can do it.

But you just made my point. Thats exactly what he is able to do. Take that ONE caller...and turn it into the WHOLE segment ranting about this stuff.

Thats why i think he has a chance when on a radio show where there can be other people talking to him. A scripted tv show isnt for him. But if he can just harness what he was doing on loveline he'll be fine
